Matildas goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold has announced her new club, signing for American side Portland Thorns in the National Women's Soccer League.

The 30-year-old, who has been at English club West Ham the past four years, will join the team after the Olympics in Paris.

It was decision which caught many by surprise given Arnold was skipper of the Hammers.

Her partner Kirsty Smith also recently penned a contract extension at the WSL club based in east London.

'This has been one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make...I had such an incredible time in the famous Claret and Blue,' Arnold wrote in an Instagram post after her departure became public knowledge.

'It's been nearly four years to the day since I arrived at Chadwell Heath and it didn't take me long to realise how special this club was and how at home I felt.

'My time here has helped to shape me as a player but also, more importantly, as a person and I have a lot to thank West Ham for that.

'I have been lucky enough to play football in many different countries, but I am so grateful to have had this chapter at a club that means so much to me. West Ham will always hold a special place in my heart.'

Once she arrives in the US, Arnold won't have to look far when it comes to some familiar faces, with Matildas teammates Kaitlyn Torpey (San Diego Wave) and Cortnee Vine (North Carolina Courage) both signing to plat since last year's World Cup.

Veteran midfielder Emily Van Egmond (San Diego Wave) has also renewed her contract in America.

'Since the beginning, this club has prioritised competition across all our positions, aiming to create teams that can compete each and every year at the highest level and win championships,' Portland's general manager and president of soccer operations Karina LeBlanc said after securing the services of Arnold.

'Mackenzie is someone we identified as a player that could help elevate our goalkeeper group. 'She is a highly decorated international goalkeeper, with experience on the world's biggest stages.

'We believe her addition will make our goalkeeper unit stronger, our team better and help us achieve our championship winning goals.'

This will be Arnold's second stint in the NWSL, after she signed for the Chicago Red Stars in July 2019 - but failed to make an appearance.

The Thorns are one of the most successful clubs in the NWSL, having won the title three times, most recently in 2022.
