Mauricio Pochettino accused Chelsea of lacking the head and heart required to win this Premier League match as they blew two leads against the 10 men of Burnley at Stamford Bridge.

The visitors, who also saw their manager Vincent Kompany red carded for protesting in the first half, twice came from behind to inject belief into their bid to avoid relegation.

Pochettino was left frustrated as, yet again, there were boos at full-time from fans who thought they would see their team move into the top half of the table.

'Today we didn’t show the capacity, the energy, the hunger – not the minimum to compete in the Premier League,’ Pochettino said. ‘That is why I am so upset and disappointed.

‘It is more here (points to his heart) and it’s more here (points to his head) than in your legs. It is more about to be about strong like a group, like a team. That is sometimes the circumstance that for different reasons we are so slow evolving in this area. That is the key today.

Cole Palmer scored twice, but both times, the Blues were pegged back by the ten-men Clarets

‘It is not to find excuses. The team played well, yes. The team showed energy, yes. But when we don’t have the ball, we don’t show the same energy.'

Cole Palmer scored twice – one of them a sublime Panenka penalty – but Josh Cullen and Dara O'Shea made sure that Burnley left with a point.

‘I am so sorry but I am not happy with the performance when we don’t have the ball,' Pochettino added. 'If we are able to create chances and find all the different ways to penetrate against a low block and a very physical team, we need to be strong also.

‘We need to have the capacity to recover the ball. We allowed them to run too much. In the first half, the keeper played quick and the action finished in our last third. That is tactics? That is to have hunger, to compete. Sorry for my speech but it is difficult to accept not winning the game.

‘It is a must-win game. We need to recover. We have another game here on Thursday (against Manchester United) and we need to be competitive and clear our head now.’

With Kompany dismissed, assistant Craig Bellamy conducted his press conference instead

With Kompany dismissed, Burnley assistant Craig Bellamy conducted his press conference instead, saying: ‘Beyond proud. Vincent is. We all are. I know Chelsea haven’t got the points they would like this season but they are an outstanding team. You could not be nothing short of proud watching it.’

On their survival bid, Bellamy added: 'The bubble we live in, we always have belief. That’s how we feel. I understand the outside world writing teams off. But we don’t look too much into it.’
