Megan Rapinoe has continued to face scathing right-wing criticism on social media after her controversial claim that her Achilles injury is 'proof God doesn't exist'.

Rapinoe, 38, went off injured just six minutes into her last-ever career game on Saturday, falling to the ground with nobody near her after her Achilles went.

But her comments after the game have since attracted outrage on social media.

'I'm not a religious person or anything and if there was a god, like, this is proof that there isn't,' the OL Reign forward said.

'This is f***ed up. It's just f***ed up. Six minutes in and I eat my Achilles.'

Megan Rapinoe said that her Achilles injury at the weekend is proof that God doesn't exist

In the immediate aftermath, SportsCenter presenter Sage Steele accused the USWNT veteran of 'narcissism at its finest'.

And right-wing fury has continued to flow, with one user writing on X: 'Stop giving her screen time. She's a terrible human being and embarrassment to women. Ungrateful and a virus to her country.

Another posted: 'Imagine being such a narcissist, that you getting an injury is the last straw for your debased eternal perspective on there being an eternal creator or not. What a loser.'

'Just sad that someone can be so lost,' wrote another. 'Especially when they are given a platform an opportunity to reach others.'

Among Rapinoe's critics was former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Devlin 'Duck' Hodges - who is dating country singer Lainey Wilson.

In reply to the video of Rapinoe making the comment, he posted: 'Wow. For those seeing this. Just know there is a God and he has wonderful plans for those that believe in him!'.

Another soccer fan expressed his delight Rapinoe 'is no longer representing Team USA' while another labelled her 'repulsive'.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers QB Devlin 'Duck' Hodges also condemned Rapinoe on social media

Rapinoe bows out of soccer as a two-time World Cup winner with the USA, scoring 63 goals in 203 games for her country.

She also has an estimated wealth of $6.3m - according to a Forbes profile ahead of this year's World Cup.

Speaking after Saturday's game, Rapinoe could at least be forgiven for cursing her luck at her injury.

'The worst possible outcome,' she said. 'I just thank god I have like a f***ing deep well of sense of humor. But just obviously devastating to go out in the final so early.

'That's life, it's part of the game. I was feeling really good before the game, wasn't feeling tight or wasn't having calf issues or anything. You don't always get to have the perfect ending.

'I feel so lucky and so grateful to have played as long as I've played and to have played with the incredible players that I've played (with).

'Every sort of new cycle that I've come with, I've gotten close to certain players and built relationships and played with some of the very best players in the world.

'I'm looking forward to retirement. I'm retiring on the field, but you'll definitely be seeing a lot of me off of it.'
