A drive-by shooting has rocked western Sydney after a house was sprayed with bullets.

The terrifying shooting unfolded on Miles Street in Merrylands at around 10pm on Tuesday.

A Hyundai hatchback was found burnt out a short time later at Bass Hill - about 10 minutes from the scene of the shooting.

A family was inside the house at the time of the shooting with a father revealing at least six bullets had been fired into the property.

Several children were asleep in the house when the terrifying incident erupted on the quiet street.

NSW Police were seen at house at the centre of the shooting and at the scene of the burnt out car.

The shooting comes just days after a father-to-be was gunned down in his car in Melbourne.

Aaron Toth, a 30-year-old carpenter from Cranbourne, was found with a fatal gunshot wound inside a Volkswagen Golf on Bride Avenue at Hampton Park, at 12.30am on Saturday.

Mr Toth, whose partner is expecting, died at the scene of the shooting.

While Victoria Police have not said the suspected shooting is linked to organised crime, detectives believe the incident has all the hallmarks of a targeted execution.

Toth's killers fled in a stolen Ford Ranger ute, which was found burnt out at Sweeny Reserve in Berwick, about 9km from the scene of the shooting, at 2.30am.
