They've become known for their viral outfits and haven't been afraid to push the boundaries when it comes to fashion.

But Sam Smith opted for more toned down look on Monday as they arrived at this year's Met Gala at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

The singer, 31, who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, put on a united display with their boyfriend Christian Cowan, in matching outfits.

In contrast to their usual avant-garde looks with outlandish shapes, Sam donned a simple black blazer and matching trousers.

The Grammy winner added a collared white shirt underneath with a baby blue satin tie, and gave their look an androgynous element with a sheer skirt.

While fashion designer Christian, 28, wore the same outfit in white with a brown silk tie instead.

The couple completed their dapper looks with metal roses pinned to their jackets, with Sam opting for silver and Christian choosing gold.

They later explained that their outfits had been inspired by the 1940s while the roses were a reference to a gift Christian had given Sam early in their relationship.

They proved their relationship is going strong as they walked hand-in-hand - quashing rumours that they had split.

There were fears for the romance over Christmas amid claims Sam had signed up to celebrity dating app Raya after the couple went their separate ways.

However, a source close to Sam soon after revealed to MailOnline that they were still together as they questioned the authenticity of the star's profile on Raya.

They told MailOnline: 'Sam and Christian are still very much in a relationship and they haven't been on Raya.

'Given there's a profile for them that exists on the app, there's a fear now that someone is impersonating Sam and they will be speaking to Raya about this.'

The five-time Grammy winner has been dating Christian since January last year after they first met when the designer collaborated with Sam on the costumes for their music video, I'm Not Here to Make Friends.

Christian's clientele includes A-list stars Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B and Heidi Klum.

He confirmed his romance with Sam with a kiss in January 2023 as the two walked together arm-in-arm in New York.

The Costume Institute's spring exhibition falls on the first Monday in May every year and is held at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This year the event is titled Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion while the dress code is The Garden of Time.

Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth are this year's co-chairs.  Also on the committee is Vogue's Anna Wintour.

The honorary chairs for the evening are Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew.

'This year's co-chairs reflect a variety of career achievements, and all have distinct style histories with the Met Gala,' Vogue shared.

The showcase will feature approximately 250 items drawn from The Costume Institute's permanent collection - with many of the pieces too fragile to ever be worn again.

The pieces will all be displayed using elements such as AI, GCI, and more while playing up themes of land, sea, and sky.

'It is very much an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion,' said Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, of the upcoming exhibition.

'One thing I hope this show will activate is that sensorial appreciation of fashion.'

Guests expected to attend include the Kardashians, Blake Lively, Hailey Bieber, Sarah Jessica Parker and Timothee Chalamet.

Gwendoline Christie, La La Anthony and Ashley Graham are hosting while YouTuber Emma Chamberlain is expected to interview stars on the red carpet.
