Micky van de Ven partners Dutch team-mate Virgil van Dijk at the back while Mohamed Salah joins Son Heung-min in attack - but can you guess the ONE other Tottenham star in our Liverpool vs Spurs COMBINED XI?

6 months ago 27

A Premier League clash between Liverpool and Spurs has provided fans with some memorable moments over the years - with this season's VAR-filled offering one of the most notable in recent years.

In a remarkable error by the VAR officials, Luis Diaz's goal was ruled offside despite the forward actually being in an onside position. In the time since this fixture, Liverpool had managed to move themselves into Premier League title contention, only to capitulate after a recent bad run of form.

Their 2-2 draw with West Ham means they are unlikely to get their hands on this year's trophy and end Klopp's nine-year tenure on a high, but some fans will still feel they have overachieved somewhat - much like their opponents Spurs.

Ange Postecoglou's high octane style has been largely successful in north London during his debut season with Spurs likely to finish fifth this season after a recent drop off which has seen them lose three consecutive games.

Here's our list of Liverpool and Tottenham's strongest combined XI, playing in a 4-3-3 formation.

Only three Tottenham stars made the combined XI but can you guess who the third is?

Goalkeeper Alisson

Despite being injured at times this season, the Brazilian shot stopper is still among the best keepers the Premier League has to offer.

He has seven clean sheets to his name in the Premier League and is a two-time golden glove winner.

Vicario deserves a mention for his impressive debut season with Spurs, but until he reaches the stature of Alisson and proves his longevity as much as the Liverpool number one, he will always be second best in this battle.

DEFENDERS

Right back – Trent Alexander-Arnold

Alexander-Arnold had to be picked in the right back position. The 25-year-old is probably the best offensive-minded full back the country has ever produced with 58 Premier League assists, though his role in the team nowadays sees him drift inside to operate more like a deep-lying playmaker.

The local Liverpool man will be looking to impress Gareth Southgate in his remaining league games with the aim of securing a place in this summer's Euro 2024 squad.

Even if he misses out due to England's embarrassment of riches in the right back position, he will still be lauded by many fans as the best right back in the business.

Alisson and Trent Alexander-Arnold have been crucial facets of Liverpool's defence in recent years

Centre back – Virgil van Dijk

Van Dijk has reinstated himself as one of the league's top defenders after difficult seasons following his injury in 2020. Only James Tarkowski and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have won more aerial duels, and remarkably he is still yet to be dribbled past this campaign.

Despite Liverpool having a fairly leaky season in terms of goals conceded, the Dutch defender has still managed to help his side keep eight clean sheets in the league.

He has also blocked 49 shots, a staggering 45 more than Arsenal's William Saliba who is arguably this season's most impressive defender.

Centre back – Micky Van de Ven

The Netherlands is clearly good at producing tall, pacey centre backs who are comfortable on the ball. Few would have envisaged Van de Ven having such an impactful debut season following his move from Wolfsburg for around £35m. However, he has proven worthy of being ranked among the world's best in his position and his relatively tender age for a centre back means his best days are ahead of him.

He has some of the best defensive stats among Premier League players this season, achieving a tackle success rate of 68% and winning 101 duels. If Spurs are to get a result on Sunday, they will need their new centre back to continue impressing with a solid defensive display.

Left back – Andy Robertson

Another player who has suffered through injury this year, Robertson remains one of, if not the, best left back in the Premier League. The Scot has the largest number of assists for a defender in Premier League history, one better than teammate Alexander-Arnold, and has chipped in with two goals this season.

Udogie would have been a clear candidate for claiming this spot in the team, but injuries have ruled him out for the rest of the season and Ben Davies has struggled in the position at times against stronger opposition. Gomez has filled in at left back for Liverpool when needed, but now Robertson has returned from his spell on the sidelines it's only right he makes it in.

MIDFIELDERS

Central midfield – Wataru Endo

Before arriving from Stuttgart last summer for a nominal transfer fee, few English fans would have heard of the diminutive Japanese midfielder. However, his displays in the Premier League this season have contributed significantly to Liverpool's league position and are further evidence of the club's ability to act shrewdly in the transfer market.

His aerial presence is impressive for someone of his height, having won 32 aerial duels and made 22 headed clearances. He is also adept at keeping possession of the ball and building attacks from the base of midfield.

Central midfield – Alexis Mac Allister

Although Liverpool knew the type of player they were getting when they signed Mac Allister in the summer from Brighton, his seamless transition into the team was unexpected and he has played a huge part in taking Liverpool from fifth last season to title contenders.

He has come up with some big goals for Liverpool, most notably in their epic against Fulham earlier in the season and more recently against Sheffield United. He also has a keen eye for a pass and is incredibly comfortable on the ball.

However, he is also proficient in winning back possession for Liverpool from midfield, having made 90 successful tackles so far in the league.

Central midfield – James Maddison

Another new midfield arrival, Maddison's performances have been worth the £40m Tottenham paid to take him from Leicester in the summer.

His appointment as Spurs' vice-captain after barely any time at the club is testament to his leadership qualities and he has a strong chance of making England's Euros squad after his inclusion in March.

Maddison is another player who has missed a big chunk of the season through injury. However, he has still managed 11 goal contributions in 24 games for the north London club this campaign.

FORWARDS

Right wing – Mohamed Salah

Although much has been said about Salah's recent poor form, the Liverpool star has still recorded 17 goals and nine assists in 29 league appearances this season.

Statistics like that would be considered exceptional for most Premier League players, but Salah is in many ways the victim of his own success after so many years playing at an elite level.

This may be the Egyptian's last season at Anfield, with the forward entering the final year of his contract. A significant offer from a club would likely be enough to convince Liverpool to sell, with Saudi Arabia an obvious destination for a player of his age and stature.

Despite a relatively lean patch of form Mohamed Salah is undoubtedly one of Liverpool's - and the Premier League's - greatest ever forwards

Striker - Son Heung-min

In the wake of Kane's departure to Bayern at the start of the season, Son has had to take on twice the offensive workload and act as the focal point of Tottenham's new look attack.

It's fair to say that the newly made club captain has flourished in his new role, scoring 16 goals and assisting nine times as he's moved into a central forward position. Spurs have not really felt the loss Kane from an attacking perspective – the team is only three goals off scoring the same number they managed last season – and Son is one of the main reasons for this.

With the talisman's contract running out in a year's time, Tottenham chief Daniel Levy will be looking to tie him down to a new contract soon, particularly given the squad's lack of depth in this area.

Since moving to a central role Son Heung-min has scored 16 goals in the Premier League

Left wing - Luis Diaz

With Werner now injured and largely disappointing since his return to English football, the Colombian was an obvious choice for the left-wing position.

Diaz has been a mixed bag following his move to Merseyside from Porto in January 2022. He started life in Liverpool with FA Cup and League Cup success but has since struggled to fill the shoes of Sadio Mane after the Senegalese forward moved to Bayern.

Still, the forward has scored eight Premier League goals and contributed five assists this season, helping out with some important goals when needed.

Manager - Jurgen Klopp

It's not just for the sentimental reasons, this being one of his three last games and all, but Klopp's record in the Premier League is undeniable.

Ange Postecoglou has succeeded everywhere he's been, and you wouldn't bet against him doing the same with Spurs, but the departing Reds boss is among perhaps the top three in the world.
