India pace bowler Mohammed Shami has become the latest to lash Australia's Mitch Marsh following a viral image of the all-rounder resting his feet on the Cricket World Cup trophy.

Angry India cricket fans blasted Marsh earlier this week after accusing the Australia star of disrespecting the trophy.

Australia were in the midst of a huge celebration following their incredible triumph over India in Ahmedabad on Sunday, with Travis Head leading Pat Cummins's side to a six-wicket victory in front of 130,000 opposing fans.

Now Indian pace-bowling spearhead Shami has joined the chorus of disapproval over Marsh's actions.

'I am hurt,' he told reporters on Friday.

'The trophy for which all the teams in the world fight, the trophy which you want to lift over your head, keeping a foot on that trophy did not make me happy.'

Mitchell Marsh has enraged India fans with this photo of himself with the World Cup trophy

India pace bowler Mohammed Shami said he was 'hurt' by the image of Marsh with his feet on the Cricket World Cup Trophy

Shami was the leading wicket-taker at the World Cup, getting 24 poles at an average of 10.70 including three five-wicket hauls.

The pace bowler notable tore through the New Zealand batting order in their semi-final clash, taking 7 wickets for 57, making it the best ever by an Indian in World Cups.

On the other hand, Western Australian all-rounder Marsh let his bat do the talking, scoring 441 runs at an average of 49.

'It's got a bit of legs that photo, hasn't it?' he joked.

'Pardon the pun.'

The Aussies are all too familiar with the famous World Cup trophy, having won it six times, while India were desperate to lift the silverware on home soil before falling at the final hurdle.

And, still heartbroken by the manner of their defeat in Ahmedabad, India fans were far from impressed by Marsh after a photo of the batter putting his feet up on the trophy circulated.

Mufaddal Vohra, who runs a Twitter account with 750,000 followers, posted the photo with the caption: 'Mitchell Marsh with the World Cup.'

A barrage of responses condemning the Australian followed, with the 32-year-old labelled 'disrespectful'.

'Dude that's World Cup respect please,' said one fan, while another said: 'Disrespect for World Cup' alongside a heartbroken emoji.

'Bro, show some respect to the World Cup trophy,' added a third fan. 'Ask Indian fans or team India about the value of this trophy.'

'It's really sad when the ones who truly respect the trophy don't get a chance to touch it, while those who don't care get multiple chances,' complained another fan. 'Heartbreaking, indeed.'

'Very disrespectful ICC must take action against Marsh,' said a fifth supporter.

He was accused of being 'disrespectful' following Australia's victory in Ahmedabad

Speaking after the victory, Marsh showed anything but a lack of respect for the tournament and the trophy.

'Pure elation. I said to a few of the boys just earlier, it's been the hardest eight weeks of cricket I've ever been a part of,' he said.

'We were 0-2 (after two matches), and Sri Lanka were none for 0-120 (in Australia's third game), so that feels like a lifetime ago. To be here with this group (as champions), it's unbelievable.'
