A British tourist is facing up to nine years in prison after he was arrested at an airport following a car-jacking rampage in Bali last week.

Damon Anthony Alexander Hills, 50, allegedly forced his way into a parked truck, kicking out the sleeping driver before driving the vehicle toward the Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai on the popular holiday island on June 9.

Dramatic footage shows the Brit speeding along the highway as police and motorists chased after him along the Bali Mandara Toll Road.

He then smashed through a toll gate and sped towards Bali's international airport with a fleet of officers in hot pursuit, breaching the gate of the I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, before fleeing on foot into the terminal where he was eventually cornered by the police.

A harrowing clip showed a battered and seemingly unconscious Hills lying on a travelator in the airport terminal as locals furiously kicked and beat him.

The Brit was later seen nursing significant wounds on his head and body as he sat on the floor flanked by a pair of guards.

Photos taken in the aftermath of his arrest showed the Englishman with his face bruised and cut up and his hands bound in yellow rope.

Inspector Putu Sukarma, Head of Public Relations Subdivision of Badung Police, said of Hills: 'He took over the truck in a very rough manner. He opened the truck door then hit, grabbed and kicked the driver until he was thrown out of the truck.

'The perpetrator kicked the victim out of the vehicle, and at that time the victim tried to get into the truck to grab the steering wheel.

'After that, the truck moved forward and hit the motorbike parked in front of him, and the victim immediately jumped down onto the road.'

Images taken at various locations along the route of the chase showed how several other vehicles had been damaged in the pursuit, including a people carrier that had been smashed in from behind.

Authorities said three motorcycles, two cars, several motorbikes, and two statues loaded onto the truck were damaged.

Iron fences, decorative pillars, and toll gate entrance six at the airport were also destroyed.

The total damages were pegged at some 150 million IDR (£7,225).

Police said yesterday that Hills was still detained at the Kuta Utara Police Station, adding they have been unable to question him because he was 'in a disoriented state'.

He is expected to be charged by prosecutors with theft under Article 365 of the Indonesian Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to nine years in prison.

'The perpetrator has been handed over to the Badung Police to undergo further examination and we are also coordinating with the Bali immigration authorities,' a statement from Bali's police commissioner said.
