New South Wales ensured they fully basked in their famous triumph over Queensland on Wednesday night after the Blues achieved a feat only three visiting teams have done before in Brisbane.

Michael Maguire's side's 14-6 victory over their fierce rivals the Maroons ensured the State of Origin shield's return south, with their win only the third occasion that the team has got one over Queensland on enemy soil.

Wednesday night's result will live long in the memories of Blues tragics and Jarome Luai played a crucial role in sealing victory, with his line-breaking burst setting up Bradman Best for NSW's first try of the game.

And he was eager to rub salt in the wounds of the Maroons faithful when it became clear that the home side would not be able to overturn their eight-point deficit.

As the Queensland fans made their way to the exit, Luai was spotted waving farewell to the hordes of departing supporters.

'If anyone enjoys getting under the skin of Queenslanders its Jarome,' said @RossMartin1960 on Twitter, posting the accompanying clip of the incident.

Luai's incredible performance capped a remarkable Origin turnaround, having been sent off last year for a headbutt on Reece Walsh. He received death threats in the aftermath of that incident, and said he was still wearing the scars to this day.

'It's sort of a scar, rather than me thinking about the actual game,' Luai said ahead of the Brisbane decider.

'But I come to the conclusion that at the end of the day your scars can make you stronger as well.'

His feathers could have been ruffled late in the first half when Queensland captain Daly Cherry-Evans bated him in an off-the-ball scuffle that sparked a sideline melee.

But the Panthers ace, denied again and again by some incredible Maroons defence, did what the 52,457 in attendance are usually accustomed to seeing from their own to deliver the match-winning hand.

Angus Crichton capped an immense series to be crowned Wally Lewis Medall winner as player of the series while recalled centre Bradman Best was also superb in filling the Latrell Mitchell void.

Fullback Dylan Edwards (236 run metres) won man-of-the-match to make it two wins from two Origin appearances.

Winger Zac Lomax backed himself to kick a penalty goal from the sideline to make the game 2-2 early in the second half, then drilled another conversion from the opposite side after Best's try.

Halfback Mitchell Moses iced the game when he danced through the line, but finished the game on the sideline with an apparent arm injury.
