Most pathetic police car chase ever: California cops take far too long to pull over gunman on a bicycle

4 months ago 19

Worst. Car chase. Ever.

LAPD officers were filmed embarking on a not-so-high-speed chase of a local attempted murder suspect - one who was able to evade them despite being on a bicycle.

The chase happened on April 26 around 11:45 am, on a stretch of the 5 Freeway. The suspect, 24-year-old John Lopez, led the officers along the highway for several minutes, after patrol units created a traffic break to keep other cars out of the way.

They proceeded to follow Lopez, who stands accused of shooting his brother, as he traversed multiple lanes.

Lopez eventually exited the freeway via the Mission Road off-ramp and continued riding in and out of traffic, before being stuck by a Hollenbeck officer with his police vehicle.

This caused him to lose control of the bike and fall onto the roadway, bringing the pursuit to an end.  The suspect was subsequently taken into custody without further incident, cops said - releasing footage of the chase Monday as proof.

The chase happened on April 26 around 11:45 am, on a stretch of the 5 Freeway. The suspect, 24-year-old John Lopez, led the officers along the highway for several minutes

'On April 26, 2024, around 11:45 a.m., Northeast uniformed officers responded to the 100 Block of East Avenue 36 for a shooting investigation,' an accompanying statement from the department read.

'When the officers arrived, they determined that the suspect, later identified as 24-year-old John Lopez, had shot a family member following a verbal dispute and was no longer at the scene.

Shortly after a crime broadcast was initiated, an Air Unit located Lopez riding a bicycle south on the 5 Freeway.

'Northeast and Hollenbeck patrol units created a traffic break and followed Lopez as he traversed across multiple lanes.'

The footage shows the rest, with Lopez seen weaving and riding - seemingly at a snail's pace - as the cop car with dashcam going follows closely behind.

Several others are seen attempting to pull up aside the pedaling perpetrator, with no success.

Eventually, the car mentioned in the statement is able to pull up with enough speed, before veering to the left to cut off the suspect.

The car then strikes the biker with a surprising amount of force, bringing him down to the pavement. Cops proceed to cuff him and make a quick arrest.

Afterwards, 'Lopez complained of pain to his knees and was treated at a local hospital,' cops wrote - before revealing he was being sought for attempted murder.

The victim of the shooting, they said, 'sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was held overnight at a local hospital for observation.'

No officers or other community members were injured during the incident, the force proudly proclaimed - adding that 'a small caliber firearm was recovered' from the suspect's person.

The department's Force Investigation Division proceeded to launch a probe into the incident, which is still underway.

That investigation found that person who was shot was Lopez's brother, shot somewhere near the 100 Block of East Avenue 36, not far from the stretch of road where the pursuit finally ended.

Public records, meanwhile, indicate Lopez has been booked at the North County Correctional Facility in La County,

He is being held on $2million bail, with his next court date slated for April 10.
