A motorcyclist called Lucifer who drove into oncoming traffic on a motorway during a near hour-long chase has been jailed for 18 months.

Lucifer O'Malia reached speeds of up to 110mph and travelled around 20 miles as he tried desperately to evade police before he was eventually arrested in a park.

Liverpool Crown Court heard that an unmarked patrol car spotted the 21-year-old speeding on Foul Lane in Southport shortly before 8.30pm on May 27.

When the officer attempted to pull the biker over, he appeared to slow down slightly but then accelerated to over 50mph.

Callum Ross, prosecuting, described how a pursuit involving a police helicopter then commenced, lasting for some 50 minutes in total.

O'Malia - who has a tattoo on his neck depicting a devil-like figure with a pentagram on its head - sped at more than 70mph in a 30mph zone, as well as at around 110mph on the 50mph Southport New Road.

He also drove on the wrong side of the road and ran two red lights, while 'the pursuit included, perhaps at its most serious, the defendant entering the M6 contraflow on a slip road and driving into oncoming traffic'.

The rider was ultimately detained after coming to a stop in Alexandra Park in Wigan.

The criminal - who was described as a 'young man who has potential' by his defence lawyers - now fears he will not see his child being born.

Appearing via video link from HMP Altcourse wearing a green Under Armour t-shirt, he was jailed for 18 months as well as being banned from the roads for three years and 11 months and being ordered to complete an extended retest.

O'Malia, of Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester, has three previous convictions for 11 offences.

This includes driving without a licence and insurance during 2020 and being disqualified and handed a suspended prison sentence in September 2022 for dangerous driving.

He was handed a 12-month community order at Bolton Crown Court in December last year for engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour and two counts of battery.

It came after O'Malia locked his then partner inside her flat on two occasions, leading to one incident in which she attempted to climb out of a window in order to escape.

But he instead pushed her into the windowsill before dragging her onto a sofa and placing his hand over her mouth.

Their relationship was also marred by him 'telling her who she could see and what she could wear', as well as 'penalising her for eating food'.

O'Malia subsequently failed to attend appointments under a mental health treatment requirement as part of his community order on two occasions in April 2024.

Ben Berkson, defending, told the court: 'He has ruined what was a rather merciful sentence in respect of the community order.

'This was an order which the defendant remains of the belief would be incredibly helpful to him. This is someone who has never had the opportunity to properly explore and deal with potentially very entrenched mental health difficulties, borne out of his difficult upbringing.

'It is his fault that he committed this appalling offence during the currency of the order. It is an offence which is clearly marked by the period that this took place.

'It was a loss of head when it dawned on him that he was going to be arrested and he decided to act in this way. He bitterly regrets that.

'This is still a young man who has potential. This is someone who is desperate to reconnect with a positive and loving relationship with his new partner, who is expecting a child in December this year.

'He fears he will not see his child being born. He is desperate to resume working as a groundworker, which he was doing before making the stupid decision to drive dangerously while disqualified and without insurance.'

Sentencing, Judge David Potter said: 'You were pursued for approximately 50 minutes, during which time you drove vastly in excess of speed limits.

'You drove on the wrong side of the carriageway, you contravened red traffic signals and, most significantly, for what must have been a significant period of time, on the M6, you drove the wrong way through a contraflow.

'You abandoned your motorbike some significant distance away from where you were first noticed.

'This was a significant period of dangerous driving. I have no doubt that you have long standing and significant psychological issues.'
