A 25-year-old man has been charged after a 10-month-old baby was found with critical injuries in southern Tasmania.

Tasmanian Police were called in to investigate on Friday morning after paramedics found the child at an address in Warrane about 1.10am.

On Saturday, detectives revealed they believe the child was injured in a 'serious assault' but warned the investigation is expected to take 'some time'.

'Police were called to the Royal Hobart Hospital around 5:20am ... after a child presented with critical injuries that are believed to be suspicious,' a spokesman said.

On Sunday morning, police said they had charged the Warrane man with causing grievous bodily harm to a child.

He was detained in custody and will appear before a court today.

The infant remains in hospital in a critical condition.

'Police including officers from CIB, Forensics and uniform are continuing to investigate and conduct examinations,' a statement from police read.
