New footage has shown the state Man City goalkeeper Ederson was in before he was substituted in their Premier League game against Tottenham on Tuesday night.

The Brazilian keeper suffered a nasty bang to the head in a second-half collision with Spurs defender Cristian Romero - but he tried to continue playing, and was distraught at being withdrawn from the crucial match a few minutes later.

Pep Guardiola later defended his club's conduct, insisting Ederson did not have concussion - but leading brain injury association Headway believe Man City should have acted immediately.

New footage shared on X (fka Twitter) showed Ederson 'pretty much passed out', while players from both sides quickly signalled that medical assistance was urgently required.

While he returned to his feet, he looked groggy, and was remarkably allowed to play on for several minutes, before being substituted for Stefan Ortega - which led Ederson to be furious at being taken off the pitch, despite the obvious problem.

Concerns for Ederson's welfare rose as the Brazilian remained on the pitch for several minutes

It was later claimed that Ederson was just suffering from an eye injury as a result of the collision, which saw Romero booked, but it raised concerns about the way that head injuries were being handled.

Luke Griggs, the chief executive of Headway, said: 'The fundamental principle of any concussion protocol is "If in doubt, sit it out".

'The concern from players of both teams in the immediate aftermath of the injury, as well as from the medical team and the fact a stretcher was brought onto the pitch, would suggest a clear concern for Ederson's wellbeing.

'The fact that he was not immediately removed would suggest a concussion was not suspected. This is hard to understand especially as symptoms can be delayed in their presentation.

'While we were relieved to see the player taken off a few minutes later, it is hard to fathom why this was not an immediate decision.

'It is yet another example of when a temporary concussion substitute would have been helpful.

'Ederson's angry reaction is no surprise given the competitive nature of players who want to take part in massive games like this one, though his reaction underscores the need to take such decisions out of the players' hands.'

Ortega came on for the injured Ederson in the 69th minute of the match, and believes he is ready to oust the Brazilian as Man City's top goalkeeper.

Stefan Ortega came on for Ederson and made a crucial save to deny Son Heung-min a goal

Jamie Carragher claimed Ortega 'basically won Manchester City the Premier League' after his superb save to deny Tottenham's Son Heung-min an equaliser in the 85th minute of the game.

After the match, Ederson revealed he received some funny messages from Arsenal fans in the run-up to the Premier League game, after his telephone number was leaked.

Man City have a two-point lead over the Gunners, going into the final game of the season, when Guardiola's side face West Ham at the Etihad.
