A baseball game between two high schools in New Jersey had a controversial ending after the home plate umpire waved off a home run to tie the game.

With one out left in a state tournament game between Northern Highlands and Mount Olive, a player for Northern Highlands smacked a three-run home run to tie the game.

But Mount Olive appealed to the home plate umpire, who ruled that the first runner did not touch home plate, NJ.com reported.

After Mount Olive delivered a single pitch, the umpire ruled the runners out and Mount Olive won the game 3-0.

It's hard to clearly say whether or not the first runner did or didn't touch home plate, but video seems to show said runner jumping over the base prematurely.

A New Jersey umpire waved off a home run in a state tournament game after ruling one of the three runners did not touch home plate. The decision ended the game.

An irate Northern Highlands coach berated the umpire while holding his players back

'I just feel bad for the kids, especially the seniors,' Northern Highlands head coach Paul Albarella told NJ.com.

'It's a shame that the game had to end on a technicality. I am very proud of my team for their resiliency all season.'

Albarella had to hold back a number of his players who ran up to the umpire in protest. Albarella was ejected from the game.

This game was part of the NJSIAA North Jersey 1, Group 3 state tournament. According to the outlet, the state's governing body for high school athletics was aware of the controversial ending.

A spokesperson told NJ.com that 'as per the rules, the play in question is not appealable.'

'He completely jumped over home plate and missed by like three feet,' Mount Olive coach Zoccolillo told NJ.com Thursday.

'The umpire was standing right there and he saw it. He saw it. And he was watching everybody touch home, and the kid jumped over home plate.

'So the second kid came around and the third kid came around, so I appealed it. Everybody saw it. Myself, the crowd, everybody saw the kid completely jumped over home plate.'
