Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was left seething with a late offside call in their defeat by the Buffalo Bills on Sunday - but a new picture suggests his protests on the day were unjustified.

With 1:20 remaining at Arrowhead, Mahomes found Travis Kelce over the middle of the field before the tight end lateralled the ball to Kadarius Toney, who scampered into the endzone to seemingly give the Chiefs a 23-20 lead.

Yet to the dismay of Kansas City and their star quarterback, Toney was deemed to have lined up in the neutral zone before the play, meaning what looked like the game-winning touchdown was erased when he drew a flag for offensive offside.

Mahomes made his frustrations with the offside call known after the game as the Bills held on for a 20-17 victory, slamming down his helmet and yelling at a referee: 'We played our f****** a**** off and you call offensive offsides!'

But a new photo has emerged which shows Toney (center, bottom) was offside against the Bills

Patrick Mahomes was extremely upset with the late call in their 20-17 defeat by Buffalo

However, a new photo from Sunday's game shows that Toney was clearly offside at the moment the ball was snapped.

The wide receiver was ahead of the line of scrimmage before the Chiefs snapped the ball, meaning the officials were within their rights to rule out the touchdown.

After Toney was deemed offside, Mahomes' last gasp attempt to keep the Chiefs' drive alive moments later fell incomplete, and he was absolutely livid on the sideline.

'That's f******g terrible!,' he was heard saying. 'Wildest f****** call I've ever seen… f****** terrible.'

Mahomes said after the game, 'It's tough to swallow. Not only from me, and football in general, to take away greatness like that, for a guy like Travis to make a play like that, you want to see the guys on the field decide the game.

'They're human. They make mistakes. But every week, we're talking about something... It's the call. Just in that moment. Not for myself. To have a flag change the outcome of the game.

'I've never had offensive offsides called. If it does, they warn you. There wasn't a warning the entire game. And then you make a call like that in the final minute?

Mahomes even threw his helmet down in disgust after the final turnover on downs of the game

'Another game, we're talking about the refs. It's not what we want for the NFL. It's not what we want for football.'

Referee Carl Cheffers explained the call in his report from the game, denying Mahomes' claim that a warning should have been given for offensive offsides.

'No warning is required especially if they are lined up so far offsides where they’re actually blocking our view of the ball,' Cheffers said in the report. 'We would give them some sort of a warning if it was anywhere close, but this particular one is beyond a warning.

'That’s what the down judge saw. He saw that the alignment was over the ball and that’s what he ruled on the field.'
