The New York Jets have waived running back Michael Carter after head coach Robert Saleh promised personnel changes in the wake of their latest defeat.

Following a 12-16 loss to the Raiders on Sunday, Saleh admitted that they were 'still looking at everything' with eight games left in the season. The team then announced Carter's waiving on Tuesday afternoon.

'As far as personnel, we are looking at making changes,' Saleh said on Monday. 'But I am going to keep that here with me. We are looking across the board to find some ways to generate offense.'

Carter's release makes room for rookie and fifth round pick Israel Abanikanda to make his NFL debut.

'We are looking at things with regards to schematically what we can do differently and trying to continue to find more ways to feature the things our guys are comfortable with – game plan permitted,' Saleh added.

Head coach Robert Saleh promised to make changes as the Jets' offense continue to struggle

The Jets selected Carter in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL draft. Through two and a half seasons in New York, Carter played in 39 games and had 21 starts. Carter tallied 361 touches for 1,760 yards and seven touchdowns.

This season, Carter appeared in all nine games for the Jets, playing in 142 offensive snaps and 11 on special teams. Carter had eight carries for 38 yards and 15 interceptions for 68 yards.

While the Jets' defense remains solid, their offense struggled heavily in the past two games.

Sunday's loss to the Raiders was New York's second straight game without a touchdown. The Jets were previously steamrolled by the Chargers, 27-6, on November 6.

The Jets now hold a 4-5 record for the season, sitting third in the AFC East. They will play the Buffalo Bills on the 19th.
