Mehrdad Ghodoussi appeared to take a shot at fans after the Chelsea game over the lack of atmosphere. Is a decline in atmosphere and noise something you've noticed from the press box at St James' Park this season?

CRAIG HOPE: During Howe’s first season fighting for survival and last year making their unlikely charge for the Champions League, every game felt like an occasion. There was a sense of jeopardy and importance. Now, that has eased a little, and that is understandable.

The crowd were quiet in the first half against Chelsea but noisy in the second when the game became more intense on the pitch. Don’t forget, too, that only last month we saw St James’ at its absolute best during the 4-1 win over PSG.

There is a concern among fans that seats are being sold at inflated prices as part of packages to, in effect, tourists. This, in turn, reduces the noise. It is a delicate balance to strike for the club, between maximising revenue and protecting the atmosphere.

The draw in Paris means qualification is still possible against Milan, but it's one of several huge games in December, including a Carabao Cup quarter final. With squad management key, what do you think Eddie Howe's priorities should be this coming month?

CRAIG HOPE: He’s working with 11 players at present, he has no choice but to prioritise every game!

I keep on saying this, but they need Champions League football. How do they achieve that? Prioritise the league and getting back into the top four? Or throw everything at Milan and make sure they stay in the competition for this season at least?

I still think top four has to be the ultimate priority, but they’ll go for everything, including the League Cup at Chelsea.

With the squad so stretched, surely it's a case of not if but who Newcastle go after in January. Are there any early noises on targets?

CRAIG HOPE: It depends on the availability of players on January 1, really. If they’re not in the Champions League then funds will be limited and it will be a case of prioritising positions of weakness.

At present, centre-forward would be a concern, given the injury to Callum Wilson and likelihood that Alexander Isak cannot continue to play two games in a week.

Then there is centre-back, where Botman remains absent with no return date, and centre midfield. The fresh injury to Willock - and Sandro Tonali’s suspension - makes midfield arguably the greatest need. Kalvin Phillips is on the list but the last I heard the loan figures being quoted were very high.

Nick Pope was immense again last night. Newcastle fans can all see it, so why isn't he getting into Gareth Southgate's England squad at present?

CRAIG HOPE: He doesn’t get in, I feel, because of his kicking. Is that right? Well, it’s Gareth Southgate’s prerogative.

I don’t necessarily share the outrage among some of Pope not being picked, even though I feel he probably should be in. He is a tremendous shot-stopper and has been a hugely important signing for Newcastle.

Kieran Trippier may get a lot of the plaudits as one of the most influential additions in the club’s history, but Pope isn’t far behind in terms of the impact he made last season.

For all of that, I think Newcastle will look to evolve their goalkeeping position into a sweeper-keeper type within the next year or so.

Some players have really stepped up during the injury crisis, but nobody expected Lewis Miley to perform as he has. What do you make of his long-term prospects? Do those inside the club have high hopes?

CRAIG HOPE: We all have high hopes! Staff, team-mates, journalists, supporters.

I saw Lewis Miley play in the States in the summer, having watched him previously for the Under-23s. I have always rated him, but I was blown away by how good he was in the States against Chelsea. He bossed a midfield that included £106m Enzo Fernandez.

Could he continue that in the Premier League? Yes. He was brilliant against Chelsea again on Saturday. Could he continue that in the Champions League? Yes! Eddie Howe paid him the ultimate compliment, capturing how well he has taken to senior football when he said that Miley doesn’t look 17, doesn’t act 17 and doesn’t play 17.

He is an England star of the future, of that I have no doubt.

One of the most striking issues last night was the lack of substitute options. What's the latest on the injury front? Is there any good news?

CRAIG HOPE: Seven subs from a possible nine (two of them goalkeepers) and Eddie Howe did not call on any of them last night - that shows you how limited his options were from the bench.

They played the game with 11 players, and that was always likely to be the case. It was, don’t forget, the same 11 who beat Chelsea on Saturday, too. To that end, it was a mammoth effort and one that deserved victory.

Will there be relief soon? No, not really. Sean Longstaff is perhaps closest but Joe Willock is looking at an extended spell out with a recurrence of an Achilles injury.

Sven Botman is the big one that they’re awaiting news on. His knee injury has settled but, if it flares up again, he will require surgery. Harvey Barnes and Callum Wilson should be back before Christmas.

Even after the dust has settled, I can't remember such a poor decision ever being given against Newcastle. What was the mood like among Toon fans and staff/players in Paris after the game last night? Is there a danger the sour taste lingers?

CRAIG HOPE: It wasn’t just last night, that sense of injustice lingers today. Checking out of my hotel, the only thing a group of Newcastle fans wanted to talk about was the penalty award.

The fact UEFA have now admitted the error will be of no consolation - everyone inside the stadium knew at the time they had overturned a correct decision and made it incorrect. It was just staggering. Eddie Howe kept his calm when he spoke with us, and he should be applauded for that - he had every reason to vent his fury.

Will the sour taste linger beyond this week? Well, that depends what happens on Matchday 6 and if Newcastle do not make the last 16 because of what happened here in Paris. If so, then yes! This could have a big knock-on effect on their ability to spend in January and beyond, if they’re not in the Champions League.
