Novak Djokovic is ending 2023 looking completely untouchable, even beyond the rising star of Italian tennis with his febrile home crowd behind him.

The 36 year-old Serb will face Great Britain’s Davis Cup team this week looking more ominous than ever after polishing off Jannik Sinner 6-3 6-3 to win the ATP Tour Finals in Turin.

Cam Norrie will play him Thursday in singles in the team event’s quarter finals at a time when the world number one looks better than ever. Having crushed Carlos Alcaraz on Saturday night he did the same to the young man from the mountains of the Tyrol, his serve being especially unplayable.

Djokovic walks away with £3.62 million from his week’s work, and his reputation enhanced even as he goes deeper into his 37th year.

Sinner had the audacity to beat him in the group stage, but it quickly became clear that this was going to be a task of an entirely different order.

Even at the age of 36, Djokovic is continuing to enhance his reputation with more success

On the unusually fast surface being used for this event the Italian would need to control his aggression amid the febrile atmosphere, but it was the Serb bringing his greater experience to bear.

Not only was the depth of his groundstrokes phenomenal, he was backing it up with the laser-guided accuracy of his serve, making it impossible to get close to a break.

Everything was in perfect rhythm and when he broke immediately at the start of the second set the outcome was looking a foregone conclusion with fourteen consecutive points going the champion’s way.

However, a missed forehand pass which would have put him 3-0 up allowed Sinner to gain a foothold and, amid frenetic ballstriking, Djokovic slightly dipped from his peerless heights, having to fight off break points to avoid a levelling up at 3-3. He broke again at the end for good measure to claim the title, seeing off the belated challenge.

Joe Salisbury was earlier thanked by his partner Rajeev Ram after the Anglo-American pair completed a triumphant end to their season by winning the ATP Finals doubles event.

After an average start to the season they defended their title from a year ago, adding it to the US Open by beating the Spanish/Argentinian team of Marcel Granollers 6-3 6-4 in the final.

‘We struggled a bit at the beginning of this year and had an amazing last few months, so Joe, thanks for sticking with me and for all the memories we're making,’ said Ram after a relatively straightforward 68-minute win.

Salisbury won £386,000 as his share of the winnings and now heads to Malaga for Thursday’s appointment with Serbia, in which he will partner Neal Skupski.
