Kyle Chalmers has stormed into the men's 100m freestyle final in Paris, and a strange coincidence could serve as a good sign for the Australian speedster.

Chalmers qualified second-fastest for the big race, set to take place in the early hours of Thursday morning AEST, with China's Pan Zhanle going quickest with a time of 47.21 seconds.

That was some way better than Chalmers, who hit the wall at 47.58 seconds, which will surely be a familiar number for the Australian.

Of course, Chalmers won the 100m men's freestyle gold in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 with the exact same time as a teenager.

He will need to go quicker than that to defeat Zhanle, but he will be encouraged by his performances at this year's competition.

More to follow.
