Patrick Mahomes was 'going to bat' for Kadarius Toney by furiously protesting the offside call that went against the Chiefs on Sunday night, says Pat McAfee.

Mahomes was left furious when Kansas City were denied a potential game-winning touchdown with just over a minute to play against the Buffalo Bills, slapping his helmet down in disgust and branding the decision 'terrible'.

After he ran through to the end zone to complete a spectacular Chiefs move, Toney was deemed to have been ahead of the line of scrimmage before they snapped the ball, meaning the touchdown was erased and the Bills ran out winners.

The decision did not go down well with Mahomes, who made his frustrations known both in the heat of the moment and after the game. But McAfee admits the majority of the football world disagrees with the Chiefs quarterback.

'[This is the] first time we've ever seen Patrick Mahomes act the way he acted afterwards,' McAfee said on the latest edition of his weekly ESPN show. 'He was visibly upset with the side judge.

Mahomes made his frustrations known when a late offside call denied Kansas City a potential victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday

'I think he was going to bat for his guy though too, Kadarius Toney. The easy answer, the internet said it about Kadarius Toney, is "this guy's a goof. Why is this guy always around losses and being the reason [for losses] for the Kansas City Chiefs?"

'He's new there, he had a massive punt return for them in the Super Bowl. That immediately gets forgotten about. This season has been a little different.

'But this kind of action from Patrick Mahomes and what he said afterwards, a majority of humans around the football world are like, "Pat you're wrong. You're wrong."

'But I think he's going to bat for his guys and he's also speaking what a lot of people think about the refs making decisions.'

Mahomes has drawn widespread criticism for his angry reaction to the offside call on Sunday, with McAfee's ESPN colleague Stephen A. Smith claiming he 'embarrassed himself' at Arrowhead.

And Smith's former FOX Sports partner Skip Bayless went one step further, branding Mahomes' antics after the game as 'spoiled brat behavior'.

'I was shocked by how he lost it,' Bayless said on Undisputed. 'Because silly me, I first thought he was throwing a fit about Toney being offside.

Despite Mahomes' protests, replays showed that Kadarius Toney (bottom, center) was in an offside position

'I thought he'd just lost his mind about, "how dare this kid do this to us and blow this game for us because we're teetering, we're reeling".

'But no, it was all directed at the referees. And that was spoiled brat behavior to me.

'You're so caught up in, "don't you know who we are? We're the defending champs. I've won two of these, I've played in three of these. How dare you referees do this to me in my house, to Travis Kelce in his house."'
