This is the dramatic moment that a cash machine is mobbed by crowds of people as it gives out 'double cash'.

Swarms of people could be seen gathering on East Ham High Street in London last night as an ATM at a local NatWest branch started 'malfunctioning'.

Footage shared to social media shows roughly a dozen people lining up outside the cash point which was said to have been giving people double the amount of cash they withdrew.

As word spread quickly, dozens more Brits braved the cold to head to the frenzied withdrawal of cash.

Sharing the news, one account on X wrote: 'Cash machine on East Ham High Street has gone rogue giving customers double cash'.

The man behind the camera filming then says: 'Cash machine giving out double money. On the high street, East Ham.'

Unfortunately for those hoping to make their way down to the ATM, the banking giant has now confirmed the fault has been fixed.

NatWest told MailOnline: 'Due to a one-off manual error, a number of transactions at one ATM dispensed more cash than the requested amount.

'This has since been fixed and customers can use this ATM as normal.'

While locals may have considered the fault their lucky day, anyone who keeps extra cash due to a machine malfunction is normally expected to give it back.

Otherwise, they could be guilty of theft.

The 1968 Theft Act says: ‘A person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it.’
