A man feared he would be killed when he was allegedly attacked by another motorist with a metal object after the pair had exchanged details following a minor car accident.

Dermott, who was driving home from work, had stopped his car at the traffic lights at the intersection of Alexandra Drive and Woodrow Avenue at Dianella, in Perth's north, around 6pm last Tuesday.

As the 55-year-old man waited at the traffic lights, a white ute collided into his car from behind.

The two vehicles sustained minor damage in the collision, with the motorists pulling over and exiting their cars to exchange details.

After the pair came together, however, Dermott claimed the other man said he was feeling sick and moved closer to the shrubs in an attempt to throw up.

Moments later, Dermott was allegedly hit multiple times by a metal object in an unprovoked attack after he went to check on the driver of the ute.

'I heard a loud bang to the left-hand side of my head,' he told 7 News

'I could feel the blood coming down the back of my neck and down towards the front of my shirt as well.'

Dermott claimed the man headbutted him in his eye and cheek, the vicious blows causing him to fall to his knees.

He was also forced to give the man his phone and wallet after the motorist demanded the items from him.

Dermott was allegedly beaten again by the man as he stood over him before attempting to fight back in fear for his life.

'I wanted to survive to get home and see my wife. That's it,' he said.

'I'm very nervous, I'm very shocked and I'm very scared.'

The alleged attacker fled the scene before Dermott managed to wave down a passing motorist.

Police and paramedics arrived at the scene a short time later before Dermott was taken to hospital with head injuries, a broken wrist and a broken hand.

A horrifying picture showed a bloody gash on his head as he was being treated by first responders.

He spent the following five days in hospital.

Police are still searching for the man as they continue to investigate the incident.

'It's abhorrent violence in the community,' Detective Senior Constable John Larson of WA Police said.

'The randomness of the attack is obviously a concern as well.'

Footage from nearby traffic cameras showed the ute has a black bull bar on the front, a black hood scoop on the front of the bonnet, and a snorkel located on the left side of the vehicle.

The man has been described as having an olive complexion and is 178cm tall.

Anyone with information and CCTV or dash cam footage, has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
