Joel Embiid is now averaging more points than minutes played in the NBA this season, a feat only achieved once in the past by the legendary Wilt Chamberlain.

Embiid leads the NBA in scoring, averaging 34.2 points per game - a staggering number that looks even more impressive when paired with the Philadelphia 76ers center's 33.9 minutes played per game.

The reigning NBA MVP's campaign to retain his crown is going phenomenally after he reached 742 points in Saturday's blowout win over the Charlotte Hornets, having played just 736 minutes in 22 games.

Chamberlain's astonishing return also came when he played for a Philadelphia-based team, then the Warriors, back in the 1961-62 season.

In his third season in the NBA, Chamberlain, then 25, finished the season with 4,029 points in 3,882 minutes.

Joel Embiid is in rarified air by scoring more points than minutes played so far this season

Only Wilt Chamberlain (left) has achieved the insane feat Embiid has pulled off this season, with the former Warriors star doing it in the 1961-62 season

Chamberlain averaged 50.4 points per game, while playing 48.5 minutes per game - more than the regulation time of 48 minutes.

From the Warriors' entire 1961-62 season, he only missed eight minutes and 33 seconds of one game because of an ejection. He countered that with seven overtime games, including three that went to multiple overtimes.

The NBA also played an 80-game schedule during that season, allowing for possibly the greatest offensive season in league history.

Embiid has quite a way to go to match Chamberlain's dominance, but being mentioned in the same vein is a massive accomplishment by itself.

Embiid has not played a game where he's recorded more minutes than points scored since November 27.

That was against the Los Angeles Lakers where Embiid only scored 30 points in 31 minutes played. In the six games since, he's had more points than minutes played.
