Piers Morgan has praised Novak Djokovic for behaving like a 'monumental d***' at Wimbledon this year.

Djokovic hit out at fans on Centre Court on Monday night after beating Holger Rune 6-3 6-4 6-2.

The 24-time Grand Slam singles champion believed that some fans had been booing him, although it is understood that they were actually shouting 'Ruuuuuuune' in support of his 21-year-old opponent.

Djokovic later walked out of an interview with BBC Sport after he was repeatedly asked about the crowd's behaviour towards him.

Before he ended the interview prematurely, Djokovic had said: 'Most of the people in the stadium tonight were respectful and I thank them and I know that, after watching tennis all day, it's not easy to stay.

After the match, Djokovic criticised the fans on Centre Court for showing him a lack of respect

'So, I was thankful. I don't take it for granted. Obviously, they're a big part of why I still play, the crowds and the people who really appreciate the tennis players and what we do and the efforts we put in.

'We appreciate them paying tickets and coming to support us and support tennis, to support this beautiful tournament. So I always try to acknowledge that. But when I feel the crowd is stepping over the line then I react. I don't regret my words or actions on the court.'

On Wednesday morning, journalist Morgan - who now works for TalkTV - took to X (formerly Twitter) to have his say on Djokovic's conduct.

Morgan wrote: 'Djokovic is being a monumental d*** at Wimbledon this year, and I'm all here for it.

'He deserves way more respect than he gets, from fans & media, and he's obviously bored with pretending he's OK with it.'

Morgan ended his tweet by encouraging Djokovic to speak to him. 'Let's do an interview, @DjokerNole - I won't treat you like this,' he concluded.

Djokovic has won more Grand Slam singles titles than any other player in the history of men's tennis.

However, throughout his career he has often been less popular, at least among fans, than many of his rivals, particularly Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
