PLAYER RATINGS - Conor Gallagher and Nicolas Jackson struggle as Chelsea are held by Burnley - but Cole Palmer shines despite the chaos

7 months ago 43

Chelsea were held 2-2 by Burnley at Stamford Bridge, a result which will frustrate both sides, who had their opportunities to claim all three points.

Cole Palmer shone through the chaos, scoring twice, including a cool Panenka finish to give the Blues a one-goal lead at the break after Burnley's Lorenz Assignon brought down Mykhailo Mudryk in the box.

Assignon was sent off for a second yellow card following the challenge, and Clarets boss Vincent Kompany also saw his marching orders during the ensuing VAR check.

Josh Cullen's first-time hit equalised for Burnley, before Palmer's second in the 78th minute gave Chelsea a short time back in front, before Dara O'Shea's crucial header to equalise three minutes later.

The Clarets also hit the bar late on from another header, but the hosts held on for a point. Here's MailSport's match ratings from Chelsea 2-2 Burnley:

Cole Palmer scored twice, including a Panenka penalty, during the game against Burnley

Dara O'Shea rose above the Chelsea defence for a free header to level the scores again late on

Chelsea

Dorde Petrovic - 5.5 - was the significantly quieter of the two goalkeepers, getting low to deny Cullen on one occasion, but was unable to do anything when Burnley's Rodriguez struck the bar late on.

Malo Gusto - 6 - added to Chelsea's injury woes when he pulled up with a hamstring problem late on, after a reasonable performance on the left-hand side.

Axel Disasi - 6 - scored from close range, but ruled out by VAR after it went in off his elbow.

Benoit Badiashile - 6 - the French defender was not able to stop the Clarets from getting two goals, as the frailties of the Blues at the back continue.

Marc Cucurella - 6 - booked for cynical foul to deny Burnley a chance to attack in the first half. Otherwise solid, with a header comfortably saved by Muric.

Moises Caicedo - 6 - replaced with Sterling for the final quarter of an hour or so, having formed part of a solid defensive midfield line alongside Fernandez.

Enzo Fernandez - 6.5 - had three shots against the Clarets, but couldn't find a way through from the centre of the hosts' midfield.

Cole Palmer - 7.5 - remained calm in a long wait for the penalty, and scored a Panenka with style as Muric dived to his left. Got between the centre-backs for his second goal, and showed yet again why he is one of the Blues' key men.

Conor Gallagher - 5.5 - booked in first half stoppage time for one of his fouls. Taken off after just over an hour for Madueke, after struggling.

Mykhailo Mudryk - 7 - brought down for the penalty, as part of a strong performance after his midweek heroics with Ukraine to send them to Germany in the summer.

Nicolas Jackson - 5.5 - missed a great opportunity to take the lead with just under 20 minutes remaining.

Raheem Sterling came off the bench for Moises Caicedo, and turned provider for their second

Substitutes: Noni Madueke (for Gallagher 62') - 6 - unable to leave much of an impression, after coming on to replace Gallagher for the final half an hour.

Raheem Sterling (for Caicedo 73') - 6.5 - came off the bench to provide the assist for Palmer's second with a splendid backheel. Missed a free header to make it 3-2 to the Blues.

Alfie Gilchrist (for Gusto 87') - called upon for the final few minutes to replace the injured Gusto.

Manager: Mauricio Pochettino - 5 - Blues dominated the first half, but only had the penalty to show for it. They were also nearly undone by two headers in the final ten minutes. Top four? What does that make Burnley?

Mauricio Pochettino said Chelsea were a top four side by the data, but they still struggled

Arijanet Muric made some impressive saves to deny Chelsea several goal-bound opportunities

Burnley

Arijanet Muric - 7 - pulled off saves to deny Fernandez, Jackson, Mudryk and Cucurella in the first half, before Palmer's penalty. Heroic second half saves too to keep Burnley in the game, showing why Kompany has put his faith in him.

Lorenz Assignon - 4 - booked for tugging Mudryk, and sent off for bringing down Ukraine's Euro qualifying hero in the box for the opening goal.

Dara O'Shea - 7 - ran to the near post and sent a thunderous header home for Burnley's equaliser. Part of a shining defensive performance for the Irishman.

Maxime Esteve - 6.5 - made a strong defensive partnership with O'Shea, and limited Chelsea to half-chances which they could not capitalise upon. Booked in stoppage time for dawdling over a free-kick.

Vitinho - 6.5 - made two successful tackles on the left-side of the defensive backline as Burnley tried to keep the Blues at bay.

Jacob Bruun Larsen - 6 - the Dane had a couple of early chances, but couldn't capitalise. Taken off at half-time for Josh Brownhill.

Josh Cullen came out the blocks in the second half with a first-time strike that flew in the net

Josh Cullen - 8 - caught Caicedo with a follow-through to be booked in the first half. Came out after the restart and hit the ball first-time so it flew past Petrovic for Burnley's equaliser two minutes into the second-half. Turned provider with the corner that set up O'Shea's equaliser.

Sander Berge - 7 - the Norwegian midfielder put in a solid performance in midfield against a Chelsea side that dominated the game, but not the scoreline.

Wilson Odobert - 7- curled a shot which forced a good save from Petrovic in the opening quarter of an hour. Had a quieter second half before being withdrawn.

Zeki Amdouni - 6 - unable to do much up front before being sacrificed for Charlie Taylor after the red card.

Lyle Foster - 7 - had a header chance to give Burnley the lead, but instead Petrovic was able to save. Played 70 minutes before being replaced by Rodriguez.

Substitutes: Charlie Taylor (for Amdouni 45') - 6 - slotted into the right-back position following the red card.

Burnley substitute Jay Rodriguez hit the crossbar in the dying minutes with a stunning header

Vincent Kompany was sent off late in the first half during the long VAR check over the penalty

Josh Brownhill (for Bruun Larsen 46') - 7 - half-time switch, and immediately turned provider for Cullen's goal.

Jay Rodriguez (for Foster 70') - 6 - hit the bar in the dying minutes with a stunning header, leaving Petrovic stranded, but unable to get that crucial winner.

Johann Gudmundsson (for Odobert 70') - 6 -  alongside Rodriguez in the double substitution, as Burnley tried to see out the game.

Manager: Vincent Kompany - 6.5 - after being sent off during the penalty check, his half-time discussion with the Clarets changed them. A valuable point in the battle against relegation - but will he think they could have got more?
