A police officer has been shot dead while confronting an armed suspect in a late night incident in regional South Australia.
Three police officers attended a property at Senior near the Victorian border 270km south-east of Adelaide around 11.20pm on Thursday night to investigate an earlier disturbance.
Police were confronted by an armed suspect before shots were fired.
An officer sustained gunshot wounds and died at the scene, despite the desperate efforts of his colleagues and paramedics to revive him.
A second police officer who was shot was transported to Adelaide with non life-threatening injuries.

The fatal shooting unfolded near the South Australian and Victoria border 270km south-east of Adelaide
A third officer at the scene was not physically injured and rendered assistance.
The alleged suspect was also shot by police and sustained serious life threatening injuries.
He was treated at the scene and airlifted to Adelaide where he remains under police guard.
Major Crime Detectives, Forensic Response Section and Internal Investigation Section remain at the the scene.
Police said there was no further threat to the community.
The incident occurred on Senior Road at Senior, 17km north of Bordertown.
SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens is en route to the region and is expected to provide an update later on Friday morning.
