Polish opposition links Tusk to Trump assassination attempt

2 months ago 15

Polish politicians reacted to Saturday’s attack on Donald Trump, with some opposition figures accusing the ruling coalition of fuelling political polarisation and linking Prime Minister Donald Tusk to the assassination attempt.

“I wish President Donald Trump a speedy and full recovery. Violence is never the answer to political differences in a democracy. I am sure this is one thing we can all agree on without any shadow of doubt,” Tusk, president of the European Council for most of Trump’s tenure, wrote on X.

President Andrzej Duda, who is known to have a close relationship with Trump, called the assassination attempt on Trump “a shocking moment not just for America but for the whole free and democratic world” and said he “thanked God for saving his (Trump’s) life.”

However, some opposition politicians used the opportunity to hit the Polish ruling camp by accusing it of promoting political violence.

“We will not be intimidated… The other side has no brakes. Good and truth will prevail,” conservative PiS (ECR) spokesman Rafał Bochenek wrote on X.

Others went so far as to link Tusk to the attack on Trump. “Let me remind you that it was Donald Tusk, the head of the Polish government, who repeatedly attacked Trump,” commented Konrad Berkowicz, an MP from the far-right Confederation.

Former MEP Jacek Saryusz-Wolski (PiS, ECR), previously Tusk’s ally, recalled a picture posted by Tusk on X (then Twitter) during the G7 summit in Quebec in 2018. Tusk appears to be making a gesture of shooting Trump in the back.

“This is how such provocative ‘jokes’ end,” wrote Saryusz-Wolski.
