João Cotrim de Figueiredo, a newly elected member of the European Parliament for Portugal’s Liberal Initiative (IL), has been selected as one of the eight vice-presidents of Renew Europe, the assembly’s liberal caucus, which now has 75 members, including two from Portugal, it was announced on Wednesday.

In a post on X, the IL announced that “João Cotrim Figueiredo was today elected vice-president of the European Liberals’ parliamentary group” after receiving 48 votes out of 71.

A source in the European liberal caucus confirmed to Lusa that Cotrim de Figueiredo is one of the eight vice presidents elected, with Billy Kelleherum from Ireland taking first place in their hierarchy.

In a statement released in the meantime, Renew Europe said that it “has become stronger today” with the new group gathering, noting that it now has 75 members (two of whom are from the IL) “and is expected to continue to grow in the coming days.”

Cotrim de Figueiredo had once sought the presidency of Renew Europe, but four hours later, he withdrew after “frank and fruitful discussions” with the political grouping’s president, Valérie Hayer of France.
