'Proud YIMBY' reveals why the housing system is broken for young Aussies - and how Albo's grand plan to 'build more houses' is doomed to fail

A proud YIMBY has revealed how young Australians are being 'failed' by Labor's grand plan to build over a million new houses amid record migration levels.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has pledged to build 1.2million new homes by 2029 in response to the country's worsening housing affordability.

Menzies Research Centre director Freya Leach said the supply of new houses could not meet growing demand - with a record 518,000 people migrating to Australia in the 2022-23 financial year.

Ms Leach said that for every new house built, four new migrants arrived in Australia, meaning the government was unable to provide adequate infrastructure.

'Whenever you look at prices there's two sides to the equation. There's the supply side and there's also the demand side,' she told Sky News program The Jury

'And it's reductive to just look at one and blame that entirely. I'm a YIMBY. I think build more houses. Let's do it, put it in my backyard. I support that 100 per cent.'

'But at the same time, I don't think we can ignore the reality that our migration levels are the highest we've ever seen while approvals are at a decade low.

'For every one house we are currently building, we are getting four new migrants. So I don't know how the math on that's going to work.'

YIMBY stands for 'Yes In My Backyard' and refers to housing activists who support city growth and an increase in housing.

Sky News presenter Danica De Giorgio asked Ms Leach whether young Australians should just 'give up' on home ownership.

'I do think it's really hard for first-home buyers at the moment, I'm actually one of them, I'm looking to buy my first apartment,' she said.

'It is incredibly difficult, I have first hand experience. But I think the question should young people give up on buying their own home?

'I just don't think we should because there are so many benefits that come with home ownership. It gives you that security to settle down, to start a family.

'It gives you security in retirement as well. The long-term financial and personal benefits of home ownership are immense and I think it's something we should continue to strive after as a result.'

During a different appearance on the Sky News program The Showdown, Ms Leash slammed the 'irresponsible' Albanese government.

'Approvals are at a decade low so houses aren't being built. Rents have gone up by 26 per cent since Albo got into government,' she said.

'It is totally reckless and irresponsible for Albo to bring in 125,000 people in one month alone and not provide any of the infrastructure and any of the housing required to actually meet these people's needs.

'And it's failing Australia's young people like myself.

'I'm trying to buy an apartment at the moment. How do you think that's going? It's not going anywhere. It's basically impossible.

'And I'm not fussy, I just want the bare minimum. If you're a first home-buyer, a young person, it is extremely difficult. I think this is another challenge that Labor's going to face with young people.

'We are totally fed up of this government prioritising everybody else in this economy other than the young people, assuming they're going to go into these polling booths and just vote for the left blindly.

'I don't think this is going to happen in this next election and I think people are realising that Labor is not here for them.'

Ms Leach is the president at the University of Sydney Conservative Club and campaigned as the Liberal candidate for Balmain, in Sydney's west, in 2023.
