After a huge Christmas meal, it's all too tempting to undo your belt a notch to make way for all that overindulgence.

But loosening your trousers at the dinner table is among the worst faux pas we make at Christmas, a survey reveals.

Forgetting to wrap your gifts – or frankly, being too lazy to do so – is another no-no that happens all too often.

Knowing your limit is important too – as one in seven of us admit to drinking more than we should on the big day.

The survey of 2,000 people, commissioned by tobacco-free nicotine company Haypp, found that a staggering one in five of us will loosen our waistbands during Christmas dinner.

And a quarter of us confess to donning a cheesy jumper on December 25 – just like Colin Firth in Bridget Jones's Diary.

A further 15 per cent even add Christmassy accessories such as a headband or earrings. Equally egregious is leaving the dinner table for a cigarette, which 10 per cent of us do, while one in 20 even vape inside other people's homes.

Other blunders include regifting and failing to bring a courtesy present for the host.

Etiquette expert Laura Ceccherini-Windsor said: 'Unbuttoning your trousers is certainly not an elegant gesture.

'Christmas is always an eventful time and your faux pas will not be easily forgotten!

'So it is better to pace yourself.'

She said of cheesy jumpers: 'It is always lovely to communicate your enthusiasm and positivity but as you fumble through your jumper drawer remember that less is always more.'
