An enormous fire has engulfed a factory in Sydney's south-west.

The blaze on Fitzpatrick St in Revesby is sending large plumes of black smoke into the sky.

Fire and Rescue NSW first received reports of the fire at 2.10pm on Tuesday afternoon.

There are 20 fire crews on the scene of what is thought to be a wrecking yard.

It is not yet known if anyone was hurt, but paramedics arrived at about 2.30pm if anyone does need treatment.

'That looks bad, I hope everybody got out,' a witness can be heard saying in a video obtained by 7News.

'All that water he just put on there doesn't look like it did anything.'

Firefighters said from the scene their challenge was 'not only knocking the fire down but stopping the spread'.

The fire location is very close to Bankstown Airport and planes are still flying past.

The airport caters for charter and private business flights, freight, aeromedical services, aircraft maintenance businesses, emergency services and flying schools.

The NSW Police said Fitzpatrick St and Milperra Road are closed due to the fire.

People in the area are urged to stay indoors and keep their windows closed due to the smoke.

More to come.
