WATCH OUT FOR…
Il EST FRANCAIS (1.15, Auteuil)
MAKE a point of trying to watch this superstar if you can. The most spectacular performance on a British racecourse this winter came from this six-year-old, who has the world at his hooves, in the Kauto Star Novices Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day. He is warming up for the French Gold Cup next month. You will not need a financial investment to enjoy watch him, all being well, sail around.
CAPULET (3.30, Chelmsford)
Aidan O’Brien would not send many horses to Essex but he is testing the water with this colt to see if he could potentially run in the Kentucky Derby next month. He will be a warm favourite but it will be fascinating to take on a field of promising and progressive rivals.
JOCKEY TO FOLLOW
WILLIAM BUICK is odds-on favourite to win the Flat jockeys championship for the third year in a row. The title race does not start for four weeks but he will get himself back into the swing of things at Kempton today with four good rides, the pick of which are Devoted Queen (3.45) and Notable Speech (4.25) for his boss Charlie Appleby.
WHAT’S IN A NAME
KNEBWORTH (4.55, Kempton)
A village in England that immediately conjures thoughts of incredible music gigs, with the Knebworth Festival dating back to 1974 when 60,000 people attended. The Rolling Stones, Oasis and Elton John, to name a few, have all wowed there. Knebworth, the horse, might not have such an illustrious back story but he has a fine chance of securing a second straight win.
ROBIN GOODFELLOW - Best Bets
By Steve Ryder
In the Rosebery Handicap at Kempton (2.40), Intinso has the benefit of race-fitness over OLD HARROVIAN (NB) but the lightly-raced Andrew Balding-trained gelding should prove hard to beat in receipt of weight from his main market rival.
Victorious on both his starts on the all-weather by a cumulative distance of 14 lengths, he was last seen chasing home the St Leger fourth Haskoy and Grade One winners Bolshoi Ballet and Yibir in a Group Three at Newbury.
This return to the AW will suit and a 322-day break is no concern. In the concluding six-furlong sprint (4.55) on the card, AZURE ANGEL (NAP) is expected to extend her unbeaten sequence on the all-weather to five wins.
A course and distance winner in 2022, she defied a 226-day absence to beat the progressive sprinter The Caltonian at Newcastle last time off 89 and runs here off only a 4lb higher mark.
THE WIZARD OF ODDS
By Chris Baker
2.05 KEMPTON
CHOISYA enjoyed a productive 2023 season with four wins and four seconds from her 11 starts. She ended the year with a Class Two victory over this course and distance. 3-1
3.15 KEMPTON
SPIRIT MIXER will have benefited from his recent return to action at Lingfield. That was only his third race since finishing second to Trueshan in the 2022 Northumberland Plate. 7-1
4.55 KEMPTON
The progressive AZURE ANGEL (nap) won her only previous start over today’s course and distance and has a good chance to extend her unbeaten all-weather record to five. 3-1
