Sam Northeast added another historic innings to his career collection on Saturday by breaking the record for the highest first-class score at Lord’s.

The Glamorgan captain made the most of losing the toss in the opening round of this year’s County Championship, hitting an unbeaten 335 to surpass Graham Gooch’s 333 against India in 1990.

The new high in 210 years of action at the world’s most famous cricket ground followed the unbeaten 410 the 34-year-old made in a remarkable win over Leicestershire in 2022 – the biggest total by a player for the Welsh county.

Glamorgan’s 620 for three declared also featured a hundred for ex-South Africa batter Colin Ingram, as the benign nature of the surface was highlighted by the fact that Sam Robson was the only wicket to fall on the second day.

Northeast struck 36 fours and six sixes in his 412-ball effort.

He said scoring 335 at Lord's was 'beyond my wildest dreams', as he broke a record set in 1990

‘To break a record like that is beyond my wildest dreams,’ Northeast said. ‘I didn’t think about it until I was on about 330. I got pretty nervous at the end when I was nearing it, as it’s a privilege to play here.’

In Division One, Essex’s dismissal of Notts’ centurion Joe Clarke sparked a spree of six wickets for 34 runs at Trent Bridge, restricting the advantage of the hosts to 40.

And there was an unlikely hero for champions Surrey at Old Trafford, as part-time spinner Dan Lawrence marked his debut for the county with a career-best four-wicket haul as Lancashire collapsed to 191 for eight.
