Scottie Scheffler may be World No. 1 on the golf course but the moment he steps off it, his dad mode is activated.

That was laid bare by the thunderstorm delay during round two of The Travelers Championship Friday.

Scheffler, who celebrated his 28th birthday Friday, had further cause to celebrate on the course as he chased down fellow birthday boy Tom Kim at the top of the leaderboard.

However, the weather rained on his parade when the klaxon sounded at 4:11pm ET following 16 holes of Scheffler's round, and wife Meredith was seemingly more than ready to hand over the parenting duties.

Scheffler revealed that he spent the three-hour delay - and his birthday - doting on his newborn son, Bennett, whom the high school sweethearts welcomed in May.

Scheffler said he idled his time away in the clubhouse with his family as he itched to get back out on to TPC River Highlands to squeeze in his final two holes before the daylight faded.

'Meredith and Bennett were there, so we just hung out, changed a diaper, and tried to get him to stop crying, but it was cold in there, so it was a little tough,' he said when finally finished his round at almost 8pm.

Before the thunder and lightning had rolled in over Cromwell, Connecticut, Scheffler's birthday round had been in full swing.

The two-time major winner had brushed off his US Open nightmare at Pinehurst last week to shoot an opening five-under Thursday and he added six more birdies alongside a lone bogey through 16 holes of his second round before being forced to take shelter in the clubhouse

However, even the three-hour storm delay and long-evacuated galleries couldn’t extinguish his revelry as one final birdie at the 18th closed the gap to the top to two. He edged into tied second alongside Collin Morikawa and Akshay Bhatia, one shot ahead of PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele.

'After the delay I came out and hit some really nice shots,' Scheffler said. 'It was nice to birdie 18 to finish. Before that I feel like I played a lot of solid golf and did some good things, so overall it was I think a pretty solid day.'

'Definitely better than last week,' he added, referencing his implosion at the 'torture chamber' of Pinehurst No. 2.

The Masters champion was later seen pushing baby Bennett in a stroller and carrying a cake

'Like I said yesterday, I found a little stuff in my swing and feel like I'm seeing the breaks a lot better on these greens. Definitely feeling some good momentum from the last two days.'

As he finally exited TPC River Highlands in the fading light, Scheffler was spotted pushing Bennett in a stroller with one hand, while carrying a birthday cake in the other.

However, it was a cluster of fans - the very few who had waited out the storm to catch a glimpse of Scheffler - who were granted a wish.

The birthday celebrant kindly gave them the cake, which was from local bakery Mozzicato's in nearby Hartford, even signing the box.
