Scottie Scheffler reveals the hilarious reason he refused to sign an autograph before the Travelers Championship

Scottie Scheffler turned down one fan's request for an autograph after he was asked to sign a Boston Celtics hat.

Scheffler grew up in Dallas and watched the Mavericks suffer defeat by Boston in this year's NBA finals.

To rub salt in his wounds, the world No 1 is now preparing to play at the Travelers Championship - in New England.

The Texan was asked during a press conference on Wednesday if he was expecting trash talk during the tournament in Connecticut.

'I did get one fan today ask me to sign a Celtics hat, and I told him no,' Scheffler said with a smile. 'But other than that, not much interaction.'

On whether other players - such as Vermont-native Keegan Bradley - would roast him, he added: 'Probably not from other golfers. 

'Maybe Keegan (Bradley), but probably not... I wouldn't really expect that out of him.'

Scheffler is hoping to bounce back after a disastrous US Open at Pinehurst, when he barely made the cut.

The world No 1 was a strong favorite last week, after claiming his fifth victory of the season at the Memorial Tournament a fortnight ago.

But the 27-year-old finished 14 shots behind winner Bryson DeChambeau after carding his fifth successive over-par round.

'I didn’t really think about it very much when I was shooting under par, so I’m probably not going to think about it too much when I’m shooting over par,' he said.

'It’s just one of those deals, like when I was playing good and I was able to survive the harder golf courses. It’s just kind of (one of) those weird little stats. It’s not like I played that bad and shot over par.'
