Spain’s Podemos warns about ‘hypocrisy’ of ‘European Commission of war’

3 months ago 15

The European Union is “complicit” in “genocide” allegedly being carried out by Israel in Gaza, while the European bloc acts with “hypocrisy” by sending arms to Ukraine but leaving the Palestinian people to their fate, Irene Montero, the lead candidate of Spain’s radical left Podemos party in June’s European elections, has said.

Montero, a controversial former equality minister, sharply attacked the EU for its “servant” attitude with Israel, Euractiv’s partner EFE reported.

The lead candidate of Podemos also attacked Teresa Ribera, the lead candidate of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s Socialist Party (PSOE/S&D).

“Ribera cannot afford to wash the face of a European Commission of war,” Montero stated, while warning of the risk that this “warmongering consensus” in Brussels could serve as an easy “excuse” to hide the implementation of deep cuts to social policies in Europe, El País reported.

Montero went on to say that “the EU today is pure hypocrisy” because, while sending arms to Ukraine, it is “abandoning the Sahrawi and Palestinian people” by supporting Morocco and “being an accomplice to the genocidal state of Israel”.

Moreover, Montero added that “the interests of Europe right now, unfortunately, have nothing to do with peace”, and that is why, as she pointed out, the objective of the Spanish and European left camp should be “to build a Europe of peace, human rights and sovereignty that does not submit to the warmongering interests of the US.”

New diplomatic clash with Israel

The Israeli offensive in Gaza following the Hamas terrorist attacks of October continued to dominate the headlines in Spain over the weekend, with barely 24 hours to go before Madrid, Oslo, and Dublin officially announce the recognition of Palestinian statehood on Tuesday.

Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles (PSOE/S&D), said in an interview broadcast by Spanish public radio and television (RTVE) on Saturday that what is happening in Gaza is “a real genocide”.

Robles’ comments provoked another clash with the Israeli embassy in Spain which, in a statement published in X, regretted that Robles had “endorsed the false and unfounded narrative of the Hamas terrorist organisation”.

According to medical sources in Gaza, almost 36,000 people have died since the start of Israel’s military offensive, the vast majority of them civilians,  with thousands more missing.
