Stanford's Tara VanDerveer, 70, announces retirement after 38 years with the school as NCAA's winningest basketball coach of all-time

Stanford's Tara VanDerveer has retired from coaching after 38 years at the Cardinal helm and will depart the sport as the winningest coach in NCAA basketball history. 

VanDerveer's NCAA-record 1,216 victories also includes seven years as a head coach at Idaho and Ohio State.  

The 70-year-old VanDerveer led Stanford to three NCAA Championships in 1990, 1992, and 2021. 

She is slated to be replaced by Kate Paye, a former player and longtime Cardinal assistant coach as the program switches to the Atlantic Coast Conference. 

VanDerveer did have a one season break from coaching Stanford in 1995 to coach the US women's basketball team in the 1996 Olympic Games.  

VanDerveer is one of the best college basketball coaches of all-time with 1,216 career wins

VanDerveer is synonymous with women's college basketball with her long tenure at Stanford
