Tensions boiled over at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night as a benchside brawl spilled out during State of Origin.

Queensland and NSW were battling for the series in Brisbane and during a nip-and-tuck first 30 minutes, the contest exploded after a coming together between Daly Cherry-Evans and Jarome Luai.

Luai and Cherry-Evans were seen pushing each other in the face before teammates from both sides piled in, and the melee spilled onto the bench with players on the benches getting involved.

Referee Ashley Klein was having none of the fracas and subsequently sent Jeremiah Nanai to the sin bin for his part in the brawl.

Cameron Murray, who was not even playing when the incident unravelled, was sin binned, meaning Mitch Barnett was forced to sacrifice himself for ten minutes.

But the response from the referee failed to satisfy Nine's commentary team, with Andrew Johns describing the sin bins as the  'biggest overreaction in Origin history.'

An incandescent Cherry-Evans called for a red card against Murray, but footy fans saw the incident differently and suggested the Maroons legend got off lightly.

'DCE got off incredibly lightly,' one fan said. 'He’s the one that caused everything. This is a joke.'
