Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth weather: Damaging winds to bring potential power cuts

1 month ago 16

A burst of damaging winds will batter large swathes of Australia with the wild weather potentially causing power cuts over the coming days.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the strongest winds are forecast for Wednesday and Thursday due to a cold front moving across southeastern Australia.

NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania are all in the firing line.

Western Australia will also cop some wild weather with strong winds forecast for the Albany, Esperance and Eucla coasts on Wednesday.

'The front will follow the usual winter path and move eastwards through the Great Australian Bight, reaching Adelaide and southern South Australia very late in the day on Wednesday,' BoM meteorologist Angus Hines said.

'Then on Thursday, the front and the rain moves through Melbourne, Hobart, all of Tasmania, all of Victoria and into New South Wales.

'Sydney could get a drop of wet weather right towards the end of Thursday but northern Australia is still staying fine.'

Another bout of strong winds is expected later this week as a low pressure system moves through the Bight.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the strongest winds are forecasted for Wednesday and Thursday due to a cold front moving across southeastern Australia

Mr Hines explained that while 'some really gusty conditions' are forecast, the winds are not expected to be as strong as the severe weather from last weekend.

'It will be a windy day on Wednesday, but Thursday for most will probably be the windiest day as we start to get really strong winds across parts of Tasmania into parts of NSW as well,' he said.

'It's certainly possible we could get some damaging wind warnings, particularly around the mountain ranges in southeastern Australia for Wednesday night and Thursday.'

Wind turbines are normally turned off during a bout of strong winds to prevent damage to the structure, meaning power cuts are possible.

The warning comes after thousands of western Sydney residents were temporarily left without power following strong winds on Saturday night.
