Sydney Harbour boat fire: Massive boat fire breaks out aboard vessel as large plume of black smoke rises above the water

A large cruiser which went up in flames in the Sydney harbour has been extinguished. 

Fire and Rescue NSW crews responded to a triple-0 call to the Birkenhead Marina after large plumes of black smoke were seen coming off an adrift cruiser at 10:06am on Saturday.

Five trucks and 18 firefighters were sent to the scene just off Drummoyne where they arrived at 10:12am and quickly worked to extinguish the flames. 

Witnesses reported the thick smoke being visible for several kilometres around he harbour. 

One marina worker who presented with smoke inhalation was treated by paramedics on the scene and has since been given the all clear.

Black smoke is pluming off the ruined cruiser which was parked just off Drummoyne near the Birkenhead Marina when it caught fire at around 10am

Two fire crews were sent into the water to tackle the boat from up close, one on a NSW Ports Authority tug boat and the others on a police vessel.

Another three hand lines worked from the shore to extinguish the flames. 

Crews got the fire under control at 11am before relocating the cruiser to the western side of the marina to get complete extinguishment.

Specialist hazmats technicians are expected to inspect the boat once there is no longer a threat onboard. 

There was nobody on the cruiser at the time the fire broke out and it is not known if its owners were present at the marina during the fire.
