Meteorologists have revealed what Aussies can expect from the weather this Christmas Day as an extreme heatwave grips large areas of the country.

Weatherzone Meteorologist Felix Levesque told Daily Mail Australia that most of the southeast won't enjoy a 'balmy summer's day' on December 25.

Showers and cool temperatures are forecasted for Sydney, Brisbane, and Canberra, while Melbourne, Adelaide, Darwin, and Perth will remain mostly dry and warm.

Heatwave warnings lasting until Tuesday remain in place for large areas of WA, southeastern Queensland, coastal and northern NSW, and parts of the NT.

Sydney

A southerly breeze brought by a low-pressure trough will bring cool temperatures and the chance of rain to the Harbour City on Christmas Day.

Sydney will receive cool temperatures of lows of 20C and highs of 26C with the day to remain mostly grey due to lingering cloud cover.

The state's northeast will receive the brunt of thunderstorms that are forecast throughout the Christmas long weekend.

Brisbane

Brisbane will receive warmer weather than the rest of the southeast with temperatures to reach lows of 22C and highs of 32C.

As the city is sitting on the northern opposite end of the low pressure trough it won't receive the cooler temperatures forecast for the southeast.

Mr Leveseque said it will feel muggy and humid throughout most of Queensland on Christmas Day, with the chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Melbourne

Further south, weather will remain cloudy and grey in Melbourne with initial forecasts of highs of just 19C and lows of 15C.

The same low-pressure system bringing cool winds and showers to Sydney will also impact the Victorian capital keeping temperatures low.

Cool southerly winds will impact the city for much of the lead-up to Christmas.

Perth

Mr Levesque said the west coast should be seeing some hotter temperatures with lows of 21C and highs of 33C this Christmas Day.

The meteorologist said a low pressure heat trough will linger over Western Australia bringing heat to the state this week and next.

Christmas Day will likely remain dry in Perth.

Canberra

There is a higher than average chance of showers and thunderstorms in the nation's capital this Christmas with lows of 13C and highs of 25C.

However, Canberra is expected to be less impacted by the wet weather than other cities due to its location on the southern end of east coast storms.

Hobart

The island state will also dodge scorching temperatures with forecasts of lows of 11C and highs of 20C on Christmas Day.

Hobart will remain mostly dry however, with some cool winds and grey clouds.

The lead-up to December 25 will also remain relatively cool.

Adelaide

Adelaide is also expected to be impacted by the cooler, wetter weather this Christmas with lows of 13C and highs of 24C.

While there will be some southeasterly winds, the chance of break-through sunshine in Adelaide is looking better than the rest of the southeast.

The day will be mostly sunny despite higher than average rainfall across the state.

Darwin

Mr Levesque said forecasts show that most of the heat this year will be centered over Darwin this year as the city enjoys more stable weather.

Christmas Day falls before the arrival of the wet season, with residents able to enjoy the holiday during the 'build up period'.

Darwin can expect lows of 27C and highs of 35C with the chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
