Sydney Roosters star Luke Keary has revealed he was left red-faced recently following a hilarious stuff up at daycare.

Chatting to journalists following his team's gritty 22-20 win over the Knights on Thursday, the playmaker said a case of mistaken identity as he went to collect his kids ensured a comical moment.

'I was coming out of daycare the other day.....a twin [woman he thought he knew] walked out and I was like hey, how are ya,' the three-time NRL premiership winner recalled.

'She looked at me as in who the f*** are you.

'I realised after a while she was a twin and I was like f***ing hell.'

While Keary laughed off that awkward encounter, he wouldn't have been smiling on Friday after he was issued a $1000 fine from the NRL match review committee for grabbing referee Gerard Sutton.

Keary pulled at Sutton's right arm when attempting to chase Knights centre Bradman Best as he made a break down the left side in the opening minutes on Thursday night.

The referee appeared to enter Keary's field of vision before the halfback made contact and then tumbled into teammate Jared Waerea-Hargreaves.

Sutton stayed upright, with broadcast vision showing Keary look over at the referee after regaining his footing.

The match review committee charged Keary with grade-one contrary conduct, which carries a $1000 fine with an early guilty plea.

Keary risks having to pay $1500 by challenging the charge.

The incident follows Melbourne halfback Jahrome Hughes receiving a one-match ban earlier this season for pushing Chris Butler during the Storm's win over the Warriors.

Penrith five-eighth Jarome Luai copped an $1800 fine last season for pushing touch judge Chris Sutton while celebrating a try in a victory over Brisbane.
