Five teenagers have been arrested after a van crashed through a bungalow wall, leaving a woman buried under the rubble of her home in a 'bloodbath'.

Georgina Smith was watching TV on Sunday morning when a van was driven into her home in Trentham - causing a wall to collapse on top of her.

The 54-year-old suffered a fractured cheekbone, jaw and eye socket and a bleed on the brain.

Her sister Kerry - who has MS - was also thrown from the sofa, and had to crawl to the hallway to phone 999 because her mobile phone was lost under all the debris.

Police have confirmed that five teenagers were arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and aggravated vehicle taking.

Police, paramedics, and firefighters - along with the force helicopter - scrambled to the Pacific Road area of Trentham at around 2.35am on Sunday (November 19) after reports a van had smashed into a home on the estate.

They discovered Georgina was trapped under the collapsed wall and as firefighters from two stations worked to free the casualty, the police helicopter was called in.

Police said the occupants of the Ford Tourneo which caused the incident had fled the scene.

Meanwhile, the two patients from the property were taken to hospital.

Kerry Smith, 56, told Stoke-on-Trent Live: 'We were just sitting watching TV. She was sitting at one end of the settee and me the other. I heard this bang and I was on my knees. I looked back and I could see this van but I couldn't see George.

'I had to crawl to the hallway to reach the landline. My mobile was somewhere under the rubble.

'I called the emergency services. The operator was asking me questions like 'Is she breathing?' She wasn't just breathing, she was screaming. There was a pool of blood, it was a bloodbath, it was my leg that was bleeding.'

Royal Stoke consultants are monitoring Georgina's bleed on the brain and may operate once the swelling has reduced.

Kerry added: 'Forty-four years of memories in that home are destroyed now. My mum and dad's ashes are in the bungalow. There are things which are sentimental. It's obliterated. It's like a bomb's hit, never mind a van.'

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, with the five teenagers, who have all been questioned, having since been released on conditional police bail.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: 'We are keen to speak to anyone who may be able to help with our investigation, particularly those with footage from the area when it happened.'

A spokesperson from West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed they were called in around 2.35am, and said: 'Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and a BASICS doctor attended the scene.

'On arrival we discovered two patients, both from the house. They were both treated for minor injuries before being taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital.'
