The terrifying moment a road rage incident escalated as a man blocked a car before emerging with a knife has been captured on dashcam footage.

It is believed the occupants of a black car were involved in an earlier traffic disagreement with another driver in a white vehicle, reported 2GB's Ben Fordham

The man in the white car then overtook the surprised occupants of the black car and stopped his hatchback in the middle of the road.

The occupants of the black car, which had the dashcam, can be heard repeatedly saying 'Don't get out of the car', before the man emerged from his vehicle in the rain, wearing a black hoodie and black shorts - and brandishing a knife.

The video then showed the man running towards the black vehicle and hitting the side of the car.

The scared driver then hit the accelerator to avoid the knife-wielding man.

One of the occupants of the black car said they needed to 'call the cops' before realising their frightening encounter wasn't over yet - the man was now following them

A crash can be heard, and it appeared that the vehicle trying to get away may have clipped the stationary white car.

The occupants of the black car can be heard asking each other 'why he did that'.

'Did you not see what he was doing?,' a male asked.

'He had a knife in his hands,' a female replied.

One of the occupants said they needed to 'call the cops' before realising their frightening encounter wasn't over yet - the man was now following them.

The terrifying encounter left the black vehicle damaged after a collision trying to escape the knifeman, as well as 'keying' on the paint along side the car from the man

'Oh my God, he's coming after you, call the police,' one female can be heard saying.

Another can be heard saying: 'I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared.'

Pictures at the end of the video showed the damage to the front passenger side of the black car from the collision and where the man has appeared to have scratched the vehicle with his knife.

A 2GB listener told the station the man in the black car was her grandson Brad, 24.

'My grandson had a man jump out of his car in a state of utter rage holding a knife,' she wrote.

'He was punching his arms into the air ... and as he approached my grandson's car he started knifing the car.

'My granddaughter and her friend were in the back seat. My granddaughter ... called ]triple 0.

It's understood the incident occurred on April 5 when the listener's relatives were on their way to an NRL game.

'My grandson is going to find it hard to drive the car knowing what occurred in it,' the listener continued.

'They are very frightened about what happened. He had to go up the footpath at certain points to get out of the path of the road rage because the guy was chasing him.'

Daily Mail Australia has contacted NSW Police for comment on the incident.
