The 'craziest' fans of the NCAA Sweet 16 teams are finally ranked

7 months ago 28

The 'craziest' fans among teams left in this year's NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 have been revealed, as Clemson earned the best 'underdog supporters' title but Houston failed live up to its top-seed ranking.

Using nine relevant factors to create an indexed score out of 100, Casino.org found that 'Vol Nation' - a.k.a Tennessee - ranked as the No.1 craziest fanbase at March Madness with a score of 83.3.

The Vols, who have six championship wins and started off the tournament as the No.2-seed of the Southeastern (SEC) conference, have their average home game fan attendance (10,532) to thank for, considering that it exceeds the size of their student section at home court - the Thompson–Boling Arena - which can only take up 10,000 college students - the largest out of all 15 other teams.

Only Arizona comes close to Tennessee's student section (9,000).

But, while 'Vol Nation' shows up in masses to games, it ranks fourth from last in terms of alcohol consumption per state (in gallons) with a score of 29.9. Only the Gonzaga Bulldogs (Washington), Purdue Boilermakers (Indiana), and the UConn Huskies come up lower than Tennessee.

Tennessee Volunteers fans have been named as the 'craziest' fans of March Madness this year

Clemson earned this year's edition of the NCAA Tournament's best 'underdog supporters' title

The Houston Cougars, who technically have the best record in the nation, ranked last per data

When it comes to party reputation, however, the school's No. 55 in the US, according to Nice. Only Alabama (No. 4), Illinois (No. 9), and Arizona (No. 40) rank higher.

The Vols also have a large social media following (94,000), ranking higher than some of its opponents (Clemson, Illinois, San Diego State, Creighton, Marquette, Gonzaga and Houston).

Tennessee's greek life is also up there with some of the other teams in the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16, scoring 47 out of 100. Only North Carolina State, Alabama, North Carolina, Purdue, Iowa State and Illinois rank higher.

Meanwhile, Houston Cougar's fans fall flat at 34.6 out of 100 despite being the No.1-seed in the nation (and Big 12) during Selection Sunday.

UConn ranked sixth with a score of 58.2/100, trailing Tennessee, NC State, Alabama, and UNC

Marquette Golden Eagles fans ranked first in alcohol consumption per state out of all 16 teams

Best 'underdog' fans go to the Clemson Tigers with the best ratio of fan support to performance, averaging a fan attendance of 80,694 despite being the No. 6 seed in the Atlantic Coast and having 0 championships.

At the same time, despite being the No. 5 and No. 6 seeds in their conferences, San Diego State and Marquette rank bottom 5 for 'maddest' March Madness fans with scores of 45.3 and 43.9, respectively.

The Creighton Bluejays and Gonzaga Bulldogs join both aforementioned schools and Houston as part of the bottom five, with respective scores of 43.9 and 43.

Curiously enough, Marquette (Wisconsin) ranked first in alcohol consumption per state with a score of 39.2, while Houston (Texas) came in second (36.9), while San Diego State (34.5) and Creighton ranked third and fourth.

Alabama is the No. 1 party school out of teams remaining in the tournament ahead of Illinois

That's four teams in the bottom five of the 'craziest fans' at March Madness' Sweet 16 round coming out on top in that category, suggesting alcohol consumption doesn't necessarily contribute to a team's fanbase's 'hype.'

In terms of leaders per championship wins, North Carolina and Tennessee have the most titles out of all Sweet 16 teams (six each), with Duke and UConn trailing by one, each.

The North Carolina State Wolfpack have two championships, while the Arizona Wildcats, San Diego Aztecs, and Marquette Golden Eagles all have one each.

UNC (Atlantic Coast), Purdue (Big Ten), UConn (Big East), and Houston (Big 12) are the only teams to come into the tournament as the No. 1 seeds of the conferences.
