The Drake curse: Rapper's infamous betting history in full after $300k loss on Canada's defeat to Lionel Messi and Argentina

4 months ago 24

Drake not only has a prolific history writing and recording music, but also placing huge sports bets which often fail to land.

The Canadian rapper has racked up a long list of massive gambling losses over the years, leading to something known as 'the Drake curse'.

His loyalty to Canada's teams and biggest native sons has been evident throughout his bets, including a $300k loss this week on the Canada men's national soccer team to defeat Lionel Messi and Argentina in the semifinals of Copa America.

The Canadians had already lost to Argentina in the group stage, and Drake bet wrong on his home country despite Jesse Marsch's squad scoring only one goal in the group stage.

In light of his latest blunder, here is a long list of receipts the 'Hotline Bling' performer has dropped on sports.

Drake has become well-known for his huge bets on sporting events over the last few years

Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Mavericks

Canada's favorite sport and Drake's love for the Toronto Raptors were the inspiration for two recent bets.

Billboard's Artist of the 2010s threw a combined $1million down on the Dallas Mavericks to win an NBA title alongside snapping Canada's Stanley Cup drought with a Edmonton Oilers triumph.

Luka Doncic and the Mavericks were lucky to win one game of that series, faltering to Jayson Tatum and the Celtics in five games.

The Oilers bet was nearly even worse, as they also lost the first three games of their championship series.

Edmonton won Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals 8-1 in a game that seemed to align everything the Oilers wanted for a possible comeback.

After forcing a winner-take-all Game 7, the Florida Panthers defeated the Oilers for the first time since Game 3 to win the Stanley Cup.

Drake's current net worth is around $250million, but throwing $1million down the drain on two bets still stings.

Oleksandr Usyk defeated Tyson Fury back in May, costing Drake over half-a-million dollars

Instead of continuing his beef with Kendrick Lamar, Drake dropped $565,000 on Fury to topple Usyk in Saudi Arabia.

The undisputed heavyweight showdown ended in a split-decision loss for Fury, however, the first of his professional career.

Usyk remained undefeated and claimed all four recognized heavyweight titles to himself.

A rematch between Usyk and Fury is now slated for December 21.

Drake could go double or nothing with another bet on Fury to avenge the loss.

Drake has lost money because of the Argentina national soccer team on multiple occasions

Drake placed two bets on Odell Beckham Jr. during the Super Bowl in 2022, winning one

History of the 'Drake curse'

Argentina's win over Canada on Tuesday night was a minor loss compared to the $1million he bet on Messi to win the World Cup final in 2022.

Drake lost the money even though Argentina was victorious after he bet on the South Americans to win in regulation. His bet did not cover extra time.

The rapper also lost a six-figure sum after Anthony Joshua's knockout win over Francis Ngannou in March, and another $700,000 after Dricus Du Plessis beat Sean Strickland at UFC 297.

He also lost $550,000 when Israel Adesanya suffered a shock defeat against Strickland in the Octagon and previously bet $890,000 on Logan Paul to beat Dillon Danis in the boxing ring.

Paul was victorious, proving a Drake sports bet doesn't always result in an instant defeat.

Two of Drake's three bets on the Super Bowl in 2022 were successful after he picked the Los Angeles Rams to win, as well as a touchdown from Odell Beckham Jr. anytime.

However, his bet on Beckham to surpass 62.5 receiving yards was cut short with a first-half injury to the now-Dolphin. Drake's combined bets won him around $700,000.
