Manchester United's Scott McTominay scored either side of half-time to lift his team to a well-deserved 2-1 Premier League victory over Chelsea at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

McTominay netted his first in the 19th minute, firing in the rebound when Harry Maguire's shot was blocked.

Chelsea's Cole Palmer, who grew up a United fan and was playing his first game at Old Trafford, levelled just before halftime when he threaded a left-footed shot through defender Victor Lindelof's legs and past keeper Andre Onana.

McTominay's second of the night and fifth league goal of the season came in the 69th minute when he headed in a pinpoint cross from Alejandro Garnacho.

Mail Sport's Joe Bernstein takes a look at things you may have missed from the game at Old Trafford.

Representatives of the ‘Forbidden Four’ were back in their press seats on Wednesday night

Media ban lifted at Old Trafford

Manchester United’s media ban lasted only 24 hours, allowing representatives of the ‘Forbidden Four’ — ESPN, the Daily Mirror, Manchester Evening News and Sky Sports — to take their press seats on Wednesday night.

There were smiles all round and even a quip from one returnee — ‘I had to tunnel my way in’ — as United were satisfied they had made their point.

They stopped the quartet from attending Erik ten Hag’s pre-match press conference on Tuesday as punishment for running stories about dissent in the dressing room without giving a right of reply to the club.

Battle of sleeping giants

Once considered the most important fixture of the season, this Manchester United v Chelsea clash felt like a meeting of two sleeping giants.

The pair won 18 of the first 25 Premier League titles between them but both currently sit outside the top five in the table.

The last time neither United nor Chelsea finished a season in the top five was way back in 1990-91. On that occasion, United finished sixth and Chelsea 11th.

Could history repeat itself this year?

Clarkson is a fan of the food

TV prsenter Jeremy Clarkson travelled up to Old Trafford to support his club, Chelsea

Former Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson made a surprise appearance on Manchester United’s in-house TV station MUTV after travelling up to Old Trafford to support his club, Chelsea.

MUTV was jokingly known as ‘Pravda’ at one time for the biased way it covered the club, so they would have been delighted when Clarkson praised the catering at Old Trafford compared to Stamford Bridge.

The narrative has generally been that the Glazers have left them feeding off scraps.
