Adam Peaty was consoled by his loved ones in Paris shortly after missing out on the fourth gold medal of his Olympic career by the tiniest of margins.

The 29-year-old from Uttoxeter had to settle for silver in the final of the men's 100m breaststroke as he finished 0.02 seconds behind Italy's Nicolo Martinenghi.

Peaty - who had won this event in Rio and Tokyo, where he also picked up a gold medal in the 4×100m mixed medley - was seen hugging his three-year-old son in the stands shortly after Sunday's final.

He also hugged and kissed girlfriend Holly Ramsey, who is the daughter of famous TV chef Gordon Ramsey.

Peaty had revealed earlier in the week that his son always asks him the same question. 'Daddy, Are you the fastest boy?'

Team GB legend Peaty was emotional after the final but said he was crying 'happy tears'

Although the answer to that question on Sunday night was 'no', Peaty declared himself content with his latest Olympic mission.

'I gave my absolute all,' said the visibly emotional Team GB icon.

'It's not about the end goal, all about the process.

'In my heart, I've already won. I'm not crying because I'm second at all. These are happy tears.

'I'm almost an older man here now. I can't have that relentless pursuit without a sacrifice. It's very hard to compete with the younger ones.'

Peaty's mother Caroline, pictured holding her grandson, was also among the crowd in Paris

He added: 'I'm so happy that I can race against the best in the world and still come joint-second.

'In my heart I have won, these are happy tears. I gave my absolute best every single day and I cannot be upset about that.'
