The DFB had anticipated a different outcome in their match against Turkey in Berlin on Saturday evening.

Intending to spark heightened enthusiasm ahead of the upcoming European Championships next year, Germany failed to set fans' hearts alive with a 2-3 defeat at the Berlin Olympic Stadium.

With German fans disheartened, initial encouragement from the early lead was curtailed as loud Turkish whistles were heard throughout the line-up announcement and continued in the match.

Captain Thomas Muller sarcastically said his side 'loved the atmosphere' after his side battled against loud Turkish support throughout the 90 minutes.

Speaking after the match, German captain Thomas Muller - who was benched for the match - expressed his frustration at the fans: 'The scenario of losing here – we actually wanted to show the fans here that they are singing for the wrong flag.

'We loved the atmosphere!” He sarcastically added.

Kai Havertz opened the scoring just five minutes in, despite taking up a new role at left-back, though instead of a compelling performance against Turkey, the national team experienced a disappointing defeat.

Arsenal fans were left in shock at the move from Naglesmann, as the £65million summer signing from Premier League rivals Chelsea has scored just once since the start of the season.

Borussia Dortmund striker, Niclas Fullkrug described the friendly as 'an away match in the capital,' despite scoring Germany's second goal when he netted home a Florian Wirtz pass.

At the start of the second half, German supporters' efforts to encourage their team were met with a symphony of whistles from fans in the Olympic Stadium.

Goalkeeper Kevin Trapp acknowledged the difficult atmosphere during the game: 'Of course the audience always plays a role somewhere. We got into the game really well and every action from the Turks was enthusiastically cheered on, including from the stands.

'But that wasn't the reason why we couldn't continue the strong initial phase. But of course, maybe in one situation or another the emotional feeling that comes from the stands made the difference on the pitch.'

Turkey, having already secured qualification for the European Championship finals in Germany, enjoyed the support from away fans. 'The euphoria is a welcome element for us' said Galatasaray defender Kaan Ayhan.
