Put into bat after the Windies won the toss at Trent Bridge put the pressure on Brendon McCullum's side to start strong only to immediately struggle as Zak Crawley was dismissed after just three balls.
Crawley's struggles were quickly forgotten though as Ben Duckett raced to 71 runs, Ollie Pope top scored on 121 and Ben Stokes added another half-century to his sensational England Test record.
West Indies denied England a chance to continue batting on Day Two with Shoaib Bashir managing just five runs before being caught behind and wrapping up his side's first innings.
